The Physics class one afternoon Came up stairs five minutes soon. When asked the reason, strange to tell They all looked wise their faces fell. For when the recitation had scarce begun And every scholar was thinking of fun, A stranger came in with a learned look And never even taking a book. He began to tell most wonderful things. That in Chicago a pendulum swings, Which shows how this earth on its axis turns, A fact that no man by his eye discerns. He asked the class how long 'twould take For this great pendulum one swing to make. A. L. Hayward soon raised the laugh By the astounding statement, one hour and a half. But the honor of the class was at last redeemed By John O'Connell who said it seemed From all the rules he could find in his book, That about nine seconds was the time it took. A few more problems such as this And Miss Wilson, thought 'twas time to dismiss. And now the thing she fears the most Whether Hayward will survive the roasts. But Hayward has triumphed over all, He knew the lowest mercury could fall Till absolute zero had been reached, 'Tis all that saved him from being impeached. C. M. C. |
