GEORGE ARNOLD, MASSENA.

A resident of this State for the past twenty years, George Arnold is one of the best known business men in this part of Cass county. He is a native of Sauk county, Wis., being born there March 11, 1856, son of John and Lizzeta (Brenner) Arnold, both natives of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. When a young man the father emigrated to the United States and resided in the State of New York for about four years. He then migrated to Wisconsin, clearing a farm in Sauk county and locating his family thereon. He resided in this locality until 1896, when he migrated further west and made his home at Massena, where he now lives retired, in comparatively comfortable circumstances. His wife died there some years ago, leaving a family of three sons and one daughter. Mr. Arnold is the only one of the children living in Iowa.

George Arnold developed into independent manhood in the State of Wisconsin, and assisted his father in clearing the home farm and in the usual labors which fall to a faithful, hardworking son. He remained in Wisconsin until 1878, when he located in this county. During the first two years he was employed as a farm laborer, but in 1880 purchased land near Whitneyville, which was partly improved. He resided on this tract for five years, and in 1885 located at Massena and engaged in the hardware and implement business in company with Van McCardy, under the firm name of McCardy & Arnold. The partnership continued until 1890, when Mr. McCardy retired from the firm and Mr. Arnold continued the business alone until 1902. In January of the next year he purchased an interest in a grain business under the firm name of Arnold & Chaney, continuing in this line until 1906, when he sold his interest and became connected with the Massena Savings Bank, his special duties being to superintend the insurance and solicitations department.

George Arnold was married February 1, 1880 to Helen Fuerst, a native of Wisconsin. Nicholas and Catherine Fuerst, her parents, located in Cass county about 1872; so they also are among its early settlers. Mr. and Mrs. George Arnold have become the parents of five children-- Daisy, Edward, Verna, Carl and McKinley. After a mention of the last name, it may be unnecessary to add that Mr. Arnold is a good Republican. He has served on the School Board and in the Town Council, and has been treasurer, having also been honored with other local offices.
