Newell - Racine

NEWELL. A village on the I. div. I. C. R. R., in the southeastern portion of Buena Vista county, 11 miles southeast of Storm Lake, the seat of justice, 234 west of Dubuque, and 123 northwest of Des Moines. It contains a bank, a graded school, a weekly newspaper, the Mirror, a flour mill, a creamery, a skating rink, a library, 2 churches, grain elevators and several stores. Live stock, grain and produced are shipped. Tel., W. I. Exp., Am. Population, 600. Mail, daily. F. P. Mack, postmaster.

PEACH. Formerly Hire’s Grove, is a postoffice in Buena Vista county, 8 ½ miles north of Storm Lake, the county seat, nearest railroad station and banking point. Population, 25. Mail, daily.

RACINE. A small place in Lincoln township, Buena Vista county, 146 miles northwest of Des Moines and 12 northeast of Storm Lake, the county seat, nearest railroad station and banking point. Newell, 12 miles southeast, is also a shipping point. Settled in 1880. It is on the semi-weekly mail stage route from Sioux Rapids to Newell. Edwin Medlicott, postmaster.
