David Prehm was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, in 1957 and attended the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in art education and coaching in 1979. As a student, he also excelled at wrestling, earning two state high school championship titles. At UNI he earned two All American honors and was selected for the National Freestyle team. Prehm began teaching art at North Scott High School in Eldridge, Iowa, and later moved to teach and coach at Britt High School (Iowa). While there he also began graduate work at Mankato State University (Minnesota), where he earned a master’s degree in studio arts with an emphasis in painting in 1988. That year he also began to teach high school art in New Hampton, Iowa, a position he retained until his retirement in 2009. While he was a graduate student, Prehm’s passion for art began to surpass his desire to coach. That, in turn, led to increased exhibition opportunities and earned him several awards for his work. He has had solo shows in numerous locations, including the Lakes Art Center in Okoboji, Iowa; the Owatonna Art Center in Minnesota; the Witter Gallery, Storm Lake, Iowa; Warburg College, Waverly, Iowa; North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, Iowa; and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. Over 500 of his paintings have found their way into private and public collections, from Iowa to Norway, France, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Much of Prehm’s work is done in watercolor, with subjects inspired by his experiences in kayaking, travel, sports and his general love of outdoor activities. "Painting on location or in the studio,” he has said, “the work stems from my appreciation and concern for natural spaces. For both the artist and the viewer, the aesthetic experience originates from being there. Connections are made by capturing the beauty of the moment". The watercolor painting by Prehm in the Fine Arts Collection was donated by William Heintz in 1997 and is part of the William Heintz Collection.
