Bertha McWilliams, 85, of Conrad, died early Wednesday morning, May 18, 2011, at the Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad, where she has resided since February of 2006. Not only her final residence, but a part of her life for she was a Registered Nurse there serving the residents 24 years. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at the Conrad Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kerry Carson officiating. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2011, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown.
Born Bertha Stubbs on Aug. 4, 1925, at Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Ralph and Ada (Keese) Stubbs. She was raised in Marion Township in Marshall County and graduated from the Green Mountain High School Class of 1942. Following a passion for nursing, she began her education at the Evangelical School of Nursing in Marshalltown and graduated in 1946. On Oct. 1, of that same year, she was united in marriage to Robert McWilliams at the Little Brown Church. They farmed near Conrad until moving to their current residence and farm four miles north of Green Mountain in 1955. Bertha was a faithful member of the Conrad Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School, VBS and served as Clerk of Session for the Presbytery, member of the United Presbyterian Women and a former Marshall County 4-H leader. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, short trips, camping, baking and canning/freezing the harvest of her garden. She was an active partner on the farm with Robert and a wonderful mother, grandmother, nurse and friend to all. Left to cherish her memory are Robert, her loving husband of 64.5 years, five children: Dorothy (Keith) Sheller, of rural Eldora, Shirley (Terry) Winders, of Garwin, David (Carla) McWilliams, of Marshalltown, Donna (Tom) Martin, of Kensett, and Tom (Janet) McWilliams, of rural Marshalltown, 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and her only surviving brother, Leonard (Janet) Stubbs, of Marshalltown as well as in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. In death, Bertha rejoined her parents and siblings- Dorothy Feske, Howard Stubbs, Marie Hulbert and Homer Stubbs.
