Daniel Witten Edmonds, 73, Manly, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. A funeral service for Dan will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will take place in the Silver Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Northwood, with military graveside honors conducted by members of the Edward-Tosel American Legion Post No. 110, Manly. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.
Daniel Witten Edmonds was born on Oct. 22, 1937, in Tazewell, Virginia, the son of Audrey and Gladys (Graham) Edmonds. Dan attended school in Tazewell and graduated from Tazewell High School. Dan also attended Montgomery Jr. College in Montgomery, Maryland. Dan was inducted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 20, 1961, in Roanoke, Virginia, and was stationed as a medical corpsman with the 29th Evacuation Hospital and was honorably discharged on Sept. 19, 1963, at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. After his honorable discharge he worked for the National Institute of Health as a medical assistant for a number of years in Bethesda, Maryland. Dan moved to the North Iowa area, and settled in Manly in 1971, where he worked for 23 years for Wilson Foods until his retirement. After his retirement, Dan enjoyed doing antique furniture restoration and also loved fixing clocks. Dan was united in marriage to Barbara Loberg on Aug. 20, 1966, in Rockville, Maryland. Dan enjoyed gardening, flowers, restoration on his home, and having a great love for animals, but his greatest love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren. Dan was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Barbara Edmonds of Manly; son, Brian Edmonds of Manly; daughter, Angie (Ryan) Hesseltine of Ankeny; seven grandchildren, Alexander, Breeana, Addison, and Ariana Edmonds, Aliya, Cael, and Peyton Hesseltine; his brother, Dwight Edmonds of Live Oak, Florida; two sisters, Alma (Mart) Peery, and Betty (John) Farmer all of Roanoke, Virginia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Enos Loberg of Northwood, Lyle (Bev) Wignes of Backus, Minnesota, and Steve (Bonnie) Pechtel of Crystal, Minnesota; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, and special nephew and niece, Dave Peery and Cindy Spencer.
