Harold Joseph Mathis, 83, of Northwood, died Thursday, Jan 20, 2011, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.at the age of 81. A funeral service for Harold was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan 24, at the Connor Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave., South, Northwood, with Reverend Tom Martin of the Bethany and Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett officiating. Burial was in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the chapel.
Harold Joseph Mathahs was born on June 25, 1927, in West Bend, the son of Antone and Estella (Ludwig) Mathahs. Harold received his education in the Thornton Community School system. After his schooling Harold worked on the family farm near Thornton. He was united in marriage to Ruth Cleveland on August 24, 1950, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett. In 1945 Harold began working at Decker’s Meat Packing Company in Kensett, until 1960, when he started his own trucking business, working for over 40 years until his retirement. Harold loved helping people, working, running his equipment, farming and visiting with his friends.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Patrick (Nancy) Mathahs and Daniel Mathahs, both of Northwood; two grandchildren, Brock Mathahs of Northwood, and Shana (Bradley) Brunsvold of Ventura; sister-in-law, Delores Mathahs of Manly; two brothers-in-law, James Lee of Ft. Dodge, and Travis (Becky) Cleveland of Dorchester; as well as many othe extended family members and friends. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth, who died on Dec. 13, 1985; daughter, Rebecca Mathahs, who died in infancy; brother, Richard Mathahs; sister, Mary Ann Lee; and a great grandson, Aidan Brunsvold.
