Elroy "Phil" Phillip Orth, 98, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at a local nursing home in Sioux City, Iowa.
A Celebration of Phil's Life will be held at a later date. His final resting place will be Calvary Cemetery.
Phil was born on March 29, 1926, in Lesterville, South Dakota, to John H. and Leondina (Gall) Orth. He spent his formative years in Scotland, South Dakota, and graduated from Scotland High School in 1944. After high school, Phil enlisted into the Navy during World War II, serving from 1944-1946, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Fireman First Class. After serving his country, Phil went to beauty school in Sioux City, Iowa to become a beautician.
Phil married Jeanette Clare Marecki on September 6, 1953, in Sioux City, Iowa. He worked at Younkers before opening Style Rite in 1979 with Marty McGinnis. He worked in the beauty business for 34 years. Phil later went to work for Rogers Electric Co. for 10 years until his retirement in March 1991.
Phil volunteered throughout his community, including at the Tyson Event Center during the NAIA tournaments for 20 years, at Mercy Hospital for 25 years, was Santa for 13 years, and was a staple at many events in the Sioux City area. He also volunteered his time at Church of the Nativity, active as a Greeter and in the Men's Club. In his free time, Phill loved golfing and could be found puttering away in his garage. Jeanette passed away April 1, 2022.
Phil is survived by his children, Becky (George) Jacobs, Andrew Orth, Phillip (Lori) Orth, Dr. Tom (Kandace) Orth; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Bernice Mazur; and nephews, John (Nancy) Mazur and Robert (Semakaleng) Mazur; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Leondina; his wife, Jeanette; three brothers; four sisters; and numerous in-laws.
