Ernest King, born on March 25, 1925, in Correctionville, Iowa, was the fifth son of Jay C. “Curly” and Freda (Harm) King. As a child Ernie helped his family in the garden and as a newspaper carrier. He graduated from Correctionville High School in 1943 and worked at various jobs until joining the U.S. Army in 1946. During his years in the service Ernie was an Army counter intelligence agent. After completion of his military term, he came back to Sioux City and worked at Armour Packing Plant from 1948 – 1958.
He met his wife, Betty Edson, in Sioux City while she was attending Morningside College. Betty was originally from Morris, Minnesota. The couple married on October 5, 1953 and made their home in Sioux City until 1958 when they moved to the Morris, Minnesota area. Ernie was employed at the soil research station near Morris from 1958 – 1985.
The couple had four children, Robert, Mary, Nancy, and Rodney. Betty and daughter, Nancy, who was four years old at the time, were killed in an automobile accident in January 1961. They are both buried near Morris, Minnesota.
Ernie remarried Thayis Boots in 1963 and had five step-sons. The couple divorced in 1981.
As a retired person, Ernie is an avid outdoorsman and loves to fish. He is known for his joking around and making people laugh. He has three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Ernie visits Correctionville at least once a year and makes his rounds to visit as many friends and relatives as he can.
