Emma Foster was born near DeKalb, Ill., April 9, 1848. She grew to womanhood in the vicinity of her birth and in January, 1863, she was united in marriage to Wm. Cummings. Two years after this date the husband felt the call to the ministry and united with the Wesleyan conference, remaining in this connection until 1877, when he came to the Methodist Episcopal church and United with the Upper Iowa Conference, in which relation he continued for 23 years. During their second year at Burr Oak, Iowa, the husband was called to his reward on June 19, 1900. During all these years Mrs. Cummings knew all the joys and burdens of the itineracy. To this union were born nine children, four of whom survive the mother:--I. A. Cummings, Kansas City; G. H. Cummings, Conover, Iowa; Mrs. Lulu Trexler, Cheney, Kas., and Harry R. Cummings, Lohrville, Iowa. A daughter-in-law, Mrs. Frank Cummings, whose husband died March, 1914, lived in Rockwell City. Thirteen grandchildren are left. Mrs. Cummings’ death leaves but one living of her brothers and sisters, Mrs. B. B. Hovey of Los Angeles, Cal., Mr. E. W. Townsend of Lake city is her nephew. Besides these near relatives there are others more distantly related who will miss her. Mrs. Cummings moved to Lake City immediately after the death of her husband in 1900, and has since resided in this city. She was led to make this her home that she might be near her sister, Mrs. W. A. Townsend. Mrs. Townsend died in the summer of 1913, and very shortly afterwards, a dear brother died quite unexpectedly. To this double sorrow a third was added in the death of her son, Frank Cummings, of Rockwell City. And now death {h}as claimed her. Mrs. Cummings was never strong in body and for the past two or three years has been an invalid and a shut in for the greater part of the time. She gained sufficient strength last summer to make a visit to her children in the south, but since her return home has been out of her home but a few times. During the last few weeks of her life she was an almost constant sufferer. Mrs. Cummings died at Lake City, Iowa, April 29, 1914, aged 66 years and 20 days.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her name as Emaline “Emma” and that she is buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery.
