PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Exum Johnson was born May 4, 1834, in the state of Ohio. Miss Leanah Jane Freer was born in Logan county, Ohio, September 2, 1836. Here she grew to womanhood. When fourteen years of age she joined the Free Will Baptist church. The two were married in Ohio, October 27, 1853. They soon left Ohio for Indiana where they lived a few years, returning in 1858, but the tide of immigration was yet westward. Great stories were told of the fertile prairies in Iowa, and they came to this state in the early sixties. For thirty-five years they lived near the village of Hesper, later moving to Decorah. After coming to Hesper township they united with the Society of Friends, which faith they maintained until their death in 1899 and 1907, respectively. They were the parents of two sons and two daughters.
