Daryl Lee Derrig, 74, of Duncombe, died Thursday, August 10, 2006 of complications from diabetes at the Villa Care Center, Fort Dodge. Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements. The family has chosen to honor Daryl's request for no funeral services.

Daryl is survived by his children and their spouses, Tom and Mindy Derrig, Fort Dodge; Kitty and Robert Busick, Webster City; Bill and Jeri Derrig, Webster City; Jack Derrig, Tulsa, OK; Leah and Todd Schomburg, Waukee; and Delayne and Steve Segar, Fort Dodge; a step-daughter and husband Lori and Jim Robinson, Altadena, CA; 18 grandchildren and several great grandchildren, his brother Dean Derrig, Otho; and sister Donetta McAnally, Rogers, Arkansas.

Daryl was preceded in death by his wife, Char Derrig, his parents Louie and Luella Derrig; and sister and brother-in-law, Doreen and Donnie Box.

Daryl was born October 3, 1931 in Fort Dodge to Louie and Luella (Conlon) Derrig. He attended Sacred Heart School through the eighth grade. In April 1948, Daryl joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan before serving in the Korean Conflict where, in addition to combat duty, Daryl was the sergeant in charge of the Seoul motor pool and served in the honor guard. Daryl was honorably discharged from the Army in 1955 and in 1956 married Elfreda Charlene "Char" Swalla, of Lehigh, in Fairmont, MN. The couple made their home in Fort Dodge where they farmed the area that is now the Knollcrest addition. Daryl also worked nights at National Gypsum. In 1967, the family moved to Duncombe, where Daryl started his own company, Derrig Construction, concentrating on excavation and city infrastructure construction. Daryl served as Duncombe's Town Marshal for 14 years and worked as the maintenance man for the city for many years. Daryl was a member of the American Legion. In the late 1980's, Daryl retired due to ill health and has been a resident of Villa Care Center for the past seven years.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family and sent to Gunderson Funeral Home, 1915 N. 15th St., Fort Dodge, IA 50501.
