Indianola Boy Goes to Europe for Four Years
Stuart Shaw Will Study Foreign Architecture
Indianola, IA., Aug 16, (Special) – After finishing a four years’ course in architecture at Columbia University, Stuart M. Shaw, an Iowa boy and an alumnus of Simpson College, sailed for Europe on the Red Star Liner, Pittsburgh, as the recipient of the Perkins and Boring fellowship which entitles him to a year’s travel on the continent.
Mr. Shaw, who for three years received the Lydia Roberts scholarship at Columbia, also won the gold medal awarded by the American School of Architecture for the best work during the four year course. The fellowship upon which Mr. Shaw goes to Europe carried a stipend of $1,800. It was won in competition with members of his class, a thesis finally determining the winner. Mr. Shaw took as the subject of his thesis, “A County Court House.” Mr. Shaw will go first to England where he will cross to France, where he will spend three months in study and travel, not only in Paris, but in the provinces where some of the fine old castles in French history are located. From France, Mr. Shaw will go to Italy where he will spend the winter at the American Academy of Science. In the early spring he will journey to Greece where he will make a study of the ruins at Athens. He will return by way of Constantinople and Germany. Before returning to American, Mr. Shaw will go to Spain where he will spend some time, sailing later for Egypt for a sojourn in that country. The Perkins-Boring fellowship is one of the big prizes at Columbia. Mr. Shaw is a son of Dr. and Mrs. R. E. Shaw of Indianola, and is a nephew of Willis Proudfoot of Des Moines.
