Killed In Crash
Man Seriously HurtA three car accident just south of Keosauqua on Highway 1 caused the death Saturday night of Mrs. Patsy Cook, 33, of Milton and critically injured her husband, Ned (Cotton) Cook, 35.
Mrs. Cook died shortly after being admitted to Van Buren County Memorial Hospital where she had been employed as a laboratory and x-ray technician since March 9, 1964. Mr. Cook was transferred to Ottumwa Hospital Sunday.
Van Buren County Sheriff Orville Lee said the Cooks were heading north toward Keosauqua on Highway 1 about 5 P.M. when the accident took place.
Roger Barrett, 69 of Bentonsport was on the highway waiting for the Cook car to pass before turning left on the Bentonsport road when a pickup truck driven by Donald Clark, 26, of Numa, Iowa, approached from Barrett's rear and swerved into the left lane, hitting the Cook car almost head on and striking Barrett automobile as well.
Both the Cook car and the pick-up were demolished. Clark was also taken to Van Buren County Memorial Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released Sunday.
Sheriff Lee said Clark is employed at Burlington ordnance plant and was en route home at the time of the accident, which took place on a new stretch of highway just opened to travel.
Mrs. Cook, mother of two, was expecting another child. Her husband is an employee of Van Buren County. The accident was investigated by the sheriff's office and the Iowa Highway Patrol.
Charges in the case are pending.
