Dr. S.M. Gaston
Democratic Candidate for Sate RepresentativeTo The Voters of Lee County:
On Tuesday, November 5, 1918, you will elect a State Representative to serve you two years. You will want one who is a loyal supporter of our great President, Woodrow Wilson.
During the next few years many momentous questions will come before the legislature. After the war, conditions will present grave questions for settlement, we will have a great national debt, and we will live in a new age.
The rights of all must be protected by laws evolved from the wisdom of national experience. There must be the utmost harmony between state and national legislation.
I served two years in the Civil war on the Union side. I taught school in my younger days. My professional life has enabled me to read extensively and to observe conditions existing in various walks of life. Experience and observation equip me to serve you. I aspire to no higher office.
It would afford me pleasure to meet each of you, but conditions are such that I cannot. If you elect me, I shall support President Wilson in all things which contribute toward winning the war and which will make Iowa have a worthy part in the legislation of the coming years.
Keokuk, Iowa.
