The Rev. Mark John Reasoner, 53, pastor of St. Jude Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 18, 2018. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church by Archbishop Michael Owen Jackels. Burial: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church, where friends may visit with the family from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Father Mark is survived by his father, Ken of Iowa City; two brothers, Mike (Margaret) Reasoner of Creston and Daniel (Andrea) Reasoner of North Liberty; three sisters, Elizabeth (Mark) Geis of West Des Moines and Margaret (Joe) Corbin and Mary Reasoner, both of Iowa City; five nephews, William (Allison) Reasoner, Matthew Geis and John, Christopher and Benjamin Reasoner; five nieces, Sarah (Jarrett) Bertog, Annette and Emily Reasoner and Georgia and Lucy Corbin; and his aunt, Joan Roets of West Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita, in 2016.
Father Mark was born Oct. 2, 1964, in Creston, the son of Ken and Rita Warin Reasoner. He graduated from St. Malachy Grade School in 1979 and Creston High School in 1983. He received his doctor of pharmacy in 1989 from the University of Iowa and practiced for five years in Maquoketa. Mark followed his calling to the priesthood and graduated with a master's of divinity from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He was ordained May 23, 1998 at the Cathedral of St. Raphael by Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB. He was assigned as associate pastor of Church of the Resurrection, Dubuque, and St. Edward Church, Waterloo. Father Mark served as pastor to Church of the Visitation, Stacyville; Sacred Heart Church, Osage; Sacred Heart Church, Meyer; St. Ansgar Church, St. Ansgar; and had served at St. Jude, Cedar Rapids, since 2005. He was the pastoral coordinator of Holy Family Catholic Schools and previously served as pastoral supervisor of St. Patrick Church, Anamosa; St. Stephen Church, Central City; St. John Church, Coggon; and St. Joseph Church, Prairieburg.
Father Mark loved to play golf and cheer for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Cubs. He was an avid reader, always enjoyed following the life events of his nieces and nephews, and was devoted to his faith.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Catholic Church.
