Essick, Arda D. Dooley - 1921-2012

Arda D. Essick, 91, passed away July 2, 2012, at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook, Iowa.
She was born on April 14, 1921, to Henry and Zella Newis Dooley in Des Moines. She married Dale F. Essick on November 22, 1941, and they made their home on a farm near Libertyville, Iowa, until he passed away in April 1970. Arda then moved to Des Moines, where she resided until 2010, when she went to live at Westbrook Acres.
Arda graduated from Twin Falls High School in Twin Falls, Idaho, in 1939. She worked at Joseph's Jewelry and for the State of Iowa, Records Division. She loved reading, gardening, photography, and quilting, and throughout her life, she displayed an avid interest in the natural world, particularly plants and birds. She was a member of Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren in Des Moines, including the Sew-ciety quilting group. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters lodge.
She is survived by two daughters, Francine Norum of Minnetonka, MN, and Dianne Crittendon (John Napier) of Santa Fe, TX, and a son Dale Essick, Jr., (Patricia) of Ottumwa, IA, as well as 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Rhea Dennis (Paul) of Des Moines, and a brother, Philip Dooley (Georgia Jannuzzi) of Magdalena, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Laurene Stroud.
As she requested, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa for medical research and education, and no services are planned. At a later date, the family will gather for burial of her cremains at Fell Cemetery, Libertyville, IA. Memorials may be made to Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren in Des Moines or to Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook. For condolences or questions please visit; www.mitchellfh.com .
