Cedar Rapids, Jan. 2 – Pa-Kee-Ka-Ma-Que, Chief of the Sac and Fox Indians, acting for the sole benefit and in the interests of said tribal Indians by his next friend and regent, plaintiff vs. H. M. Rebok, as the former United States agent of said Indians, defendant, is the title of a suit just commenced in the federal court in this city. Chief Pa-Kee-Ka-Ma-Que asks $50,000 for himself and tribe by reason of alleged illegal acts of Agent Rebok. Rebok is charged with placing a renegade chief over the tribe and with approaching his own benefit the rentals of the Indians lands and of other various corrupt practices contrary to the act of congress.
Government officials are of the opinion that this suit, as well as a number of other suits against government officials which have preceded it, will but result in the establishment of the rights of Indians on the reservation, and that if certain portions of the rules and regulations of the interior department is not in accordance with the treaties with the Indians and acts of congress, that remedial legislation will be enacted by congress. The Indian agents of Tama County reservation have always acted under rules and regulations prescribed by the Indian commission and in good faith, and any wrongdoing, if there have been any, it is -ualmed have been merely technical.
