WERE PIONEERS
IN TAMA COUNTY

In 1858 little Amanda Korns, 1 1-2 years old came west with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Korns to settle in Tama county. There was no Tama then. When it was started it was first called Iyuka, and there were only three settlers in Highland Twp.

Indiantown was their post office and they traded at Iowa City until the railroad came to Grinnell in 1863. After that they used Grinnell as their trading center, coming by a route south three miles to Dan Hays' home, then southwest across the section, then south, coming into Grinnell by a road somewhere between Snow's corner and No. 146.

As they rode along they used to see wolves at a distance on the prairie.

But the object of greatest interest to Amanda (now Mrs. S.A. Moors) on that long journey was the grove at Bear Creek. There were no trees by her home. All was prairie from Highland Twp. to Grinnell except for that grove of trees.
