MISS ANNA ROE

Funeral services for Miss Anna Roe were held here Monday afternoon. At one o'clock at the home of her nephew, Martin S. Olson, and at 1:30 in the St. Petri church, with Rev. Nelson officiating.

At the home Miss Thelma Hagen sang "Asleep in Jesus," and in the church Mrs. Lester Henderson sang "Beneath the Cross of Jesus."

The pall bearers were six of her nephew: Martin and Chas. Roe, Martin Olson, and Sam, Albert and Cornelius Hanson.

Obituary

The death of Miss Anna Roe, Friday evening, January 28th, 1938, marks the passing of the last survivor of a prominent pioneer family of near Roland--the Ole S. Roe family. She was a sister of the late Ole O. Roe (for several years Story county School Superintendent, and Iowa's first state Fire Marshall), and of Mrs. Johanna Hanson and Mrs. Martha Olson of this place, who have died during the past few years. Six brothers and sisters, besides her parents, have preceded her in death.

Anna Roe was born in Norway, May 9, 1860, thus being 77 years, 8 months and 19 days at the time of her death. In 1862 she, with her parents and brother, Ole, immigrated to this country and settled in Clinton county. Here she lived until 1868, when the family moved by prairie schooner, t a farm 3 1/2 miles southeast of Roland.

Before moving to Story City she was employed in Des Moines, Marshalltown and in Nevada, and was a helping hand in many homes. In 1902 she and her mother moved to Story City, where Anna cared for her aged mother until her death in 1917.

Anna Roe was confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran church in Roland and since living in Story City, has been a member of St. Petri Lutheran church.

In 1936, her health became so poor that she could no longer care for herself and in August was taken to the home of her niece, Mrs. Anna Hunter, where Mrs. Hunter and daughter Fern have so faithfully given the best of care. Her several other nieces and nephews have also done all they could for her, to make her comfortable. "Aunt Annie," as they called her, will be greatly missed by them all.
