Source Kober Funeral Home on line.
Matthew G. Dennison of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on October 16th, 2024, after a courageous battle with bile duct cancer. Matt was born on November 13, 1957, to Casson L. and Joyce A. Dennison, in Sioux Falls, SD. His mother, Joyce, often referred to him as an “answered prayer” after losing their firstborn, Casson John, at just 6 months old.
From a young age, he grew into a protector for his family, a trait he carried with him until he passed. He attended grade school in both Sioux Falls and Sioux City, before finishing in Hawarden, Iowa. Matt was always fond of his time living in Chatsworth, IA, and was a proud member of the self-proclaimed “Chatsworth Rats,” along with his lifelong best friend, Dan Tentinger.
Matt graduated from West Sioux High School in 1976. In 1978, he began working for the Union County Highway Department, a job he kept for an impressive 42 years until his retirement in early 2021. His dedication to his work and his community was evident, but his heart truly belonged to his family and his hobbies. Many knew Matt for his love of hot rods, often reminiscing about his ability to identify the make and year of every car by the time he was just two years old—a story his mother, Joyce, loved to tell.
Matt found joy in caring for his sister, Mary Lee, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His involvement in his parish was something that he valued greatly, and was in his seat at church every weekend without fail. He also had a passion for collecting and building train sets, watching and feeding the birds and wildlife around his home, and enjoying quiet mornings and evenings on his porch during his retirement. His life was full of small, cherished moments that reflected his kind and thoughtful nature.
Matt is survived by his children, Amber (Nate) Hans of Yankton, SD; Bethany (John) Hipolito of Vermillion, SD; and Casson A. (Arianne) Dennison of Dell Rapids, SD. He also leaves behind his siblings: Mary Lee Dennison of Vermillion, SD; Timothy (Katherine) Dennison of St. John’s, FL; and Glenn Dennison of Elk Point, SD; 10 grandchildren, 8 nieces and nephews, and his lifelong best friend, Dan Tentinger of Akron, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Casson L. and Joyce A. Dennison, his brother Casson John, and his sister Theresa.
Matt's family and friends will always remember his unwavering love, his playful spirit, keen humor, and his deep connection to the things and people he loved.
Services will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elk Point, with a wake service on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 5-7 p.m., with a recitation of the Holy Rosary starting at 6:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be Friday, October 25, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. with interment immediately following at the St. Joseph Cemetery, Elk Point, SD. A light meal and refreshments will follow.
