Sharon DeVries, 84, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Sioux Center, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, surrounded by her family.
Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024, at New Life Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. at New Life Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. Pastor Dan Kruse will officiate. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.
Sharon Kay Ehlers, the daughter of Carl and Mayme (Dilly) Ehlers, was born on June 20, 1940, in Ashton, Iowa. She grew up in Ashton where she attended school. She graduated from Ashton High School in 1957.
She was united in marriage to Theodore ‘Ted’ DeVries on April 24, 1959, in Ashton, Iowa. After their marriage, they moved to Luverne, Minnesota. Sharon drove school bus for the Luverne School district. While living in Luverne, she and Ted were members of the American Reformed Church in Luverne, where they were counselors for R.C.Y.F. for several years. She was strong in her faith.
In 1979, they moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, where they built and operated the Magic Wheels Roller Skating Rink. Many fond memories and a few courtships were formed at the rink. They operated the rink until 1995. For 6 summers, they traveled to various locations, such as fairs and private celebrations, operating a mini-donut and super slide business. From 1991 until 2008, the couple owned and operated White Oak Campground at West Lake Okoboji. Ted passed away on December 26, 2017. Sharon continued to make her home in Sioux Center until 2023, when she moved to Stonebridge Suites (formerly Park Place Estates) in Le Mars.
Sharon was an active member of New Life Church in Sioux Center. Over the years, she enjoyed singing and square dancing. She and Ted enjoyed spending many winters in Arizona. She loved the time spent with her family. Many get togethers involved a game of Bingo! She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities and events.
Survivors include a son, Paul (Kimberly) DeVries of Blaine, MN; a daughter, Sharla (Bob) Kommes of Le Mars, IA; 6 grandchildren: Lexie DeVries, Peter DeVries, Kyle (Kassidy) Kommes, Jamie Kommes, Brady Kommes, and Andrea Kommes; a sister in law, Paulette Connell of Elkhorn, NE; a niece, Kim (Chad) LaGrange of Elkorn, NE; and other extended family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mayme Ehlers; her husband, Theodore ‘Ted’ DeVries; a grandson, Michael Carl Kommes; and her in laws, Steve Connell and H. Ann Anderson.
