Three Farms Earn Century Honor
Three local farms were among 316 state farms designated as Century Farms this year by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. At a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 20 the Herman Langstraat, James Cleveringa and Bruce Vosburg farms were honored by Iowa secretary of agriculture Robert Lounsberry and Robert Joslin of the Iowa Farm Bureau. [followed by an explanation of the program]
The Langstraat farm, originally 147 acres 2¾ miles north of Newkirk, was bought in 1895 [i.e., 1885] by Herman’s grandfather, Pieter Langstraat. Herman’s father, Henry, began farming the land in 1910. Herman took over in 1945. He’s retired and 80 acres have been sold, but the remaining 67 acres are being farmed by his son Rod.
One hundred and twenty acres of the James Cleveringa farm are still a part of his family. The farm, 1 mile east and 2½ [miles] north of Newkirk, was bought in 1886 by Henry Jurink, James’ grandfather. His father, Nick Cleveringa, started farming the land around 1918, and James took over in 1947.
In 1884, Ed Vosburg bought 640 acres to farm ¼ mile south of Granville. Dr. Paul Vosburg farmed it next, and Bruce Vosburg, recipient of the Century Farm recognition, presently owns 320 acres of the original plot.
