Klein, Johannes ‘Hannes’ 1824-1909 Cornelia De Velder family
This biography of the Johannes Klein family was composed by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. The narrative was made from various sources including records from the web site www.iagenweb.org/sioux ; family reports and vitals collected from ancestry.com records and public member trees, Find A Grave index and various local archives, books and publications.
Disclaimer: Names, dates and places may very form one source to another, but have been stated in this biography as presented in the source. Family data taken from ancestry.com public member trees is subject to the accuracy of the submitter of data to ancestry.com and was not verified by this submitter. Information was cross checked from other sources where possible. Sometimes facts may get clouded as information passes down the several generations. The sources for information on the Oregon Wagon Train were passed on to the author of the book ‘Story of Sioux County’ by Charles Dyke in personal interviews in 1939 with grandchildren of the some of the families in the movement, published in 1942.
Johannes Klein family may have been involved in a Wagon Train that left Pella Iowa in 1864 and six months later arrived in Oregon after a grueling over land trip enduring many hardships. Our web page www.iagenweb.org/sioux has set up a page with accounts of that journey. See ‘Onsite Resources’ go to Biographies ‘Wagons Ho’ the 1864-1870 Oregon Trail, to read about this family who may have and others who experienced the wagon trip as well as the later migration 1870 from Pella that led to Sioux County Iowa. In the book Sioux County History, there are actual transcriptions of vivid accounts of the Oregon Trail experience on pages 402-414 and pages 429-430. In the page 429-430 it mentions “in the group were families of Leendert Van Der Meer, Dirk Van Den Bos, C. Newendorp, Dirk Van Der Meer, Lutje Mars, Wopke De Haan and Hannes Klein. (Therefore, it has can assumed that Klein family may have traveled with the Oregon Wagon Train, but no reference to that in their family information).
However, what accounts exist for the birth of the children 1864-1870 indicate they were born in Iowa so did they get to Oregon and return to Iowa shortly after by newly built railroads? Cornelia’s sister Mrs. L. Vander Meer family did go to Oregon. If anyone can confirm whether or not this family was in the group that made up the Oregon Wagon train please contact our page coordinator at www.iagenweb.org/sioux .

Sioux County Herald of Dec 3, 1874 Translated from Dutch to English Messrs. Wopke De Haan and Johannes Klein, in charge of the earthing up of our Courthouse, the building of a coal shed, and a secret facility with six spectacles, have completed their duties to the great satisfaction of the Board of Supervisors. Quietly, diligently, relentlessly they worked on, and the respective, buttocks circles answer perfectly, both symmetrically, prospectively and mathematically.Sioux county Herald of Nov 12, 1874 page 5, Johannes Klein was awarded the contract for banking up the court house, which he has finished, and it is well done, too.

Sioux Center Nieuwsblad of Wednesday 16, 1905 Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Johannes Klein Yesterday, Tuesday, August 15, Johannes Klein and his wife were privileged to commemorate the day on which they were united in marriage for fifty years. Fifty years – half a century. It is as old mother Klein rightly said: a long time when one still has it in front of one’s chest, but only a short time when it is behind one. Johannes Klein was born on September 6, 1824, in Leerdam, prov. South Holland, and reached the age of almost 81 years. Cornelia de Veder (now Mrs. Klein) was born in Rotterdam on May 14, 1838 and is thus 14 years younger. She came in 1847 with her parents to America who settled in Pella. On August 15, 1855 the two were married. They were among the first who settled in Sioux county, but did not remain here, but emigrated in 1883 to S. Dakota, from where they came again to Sioux County in 1895 and settled here. From their marriage 8 children were born, of whom 4 grew up, namely. Cornelia Klein, now living at Ireton, Johan Klein at Harrison, S. Dak., Mrs. Al J. Huber at Sioux Center and Mrs. J. Huber, who died in 1896 at Sioux Center at the age of 31 years. The old gentleman has been ill for the last year and is still ill. With their many friends we wish the true couple that He, who has been so graciously near them up to now, may be a comfort to them especially in their old age. (noted: no mention of an Oregon Trip 1864-1869)
