DeHaan, Wopke 1816-1885 and Wives Families

This biography of the Wopke De Haan family was composed by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. The narrative was made from various sources including records from the web site www.iagenweb.org/sioux ; family reports and vitals collected from ancestry.com records and it’s public member trees, Find A Grave index and various local archives, books and publications.

Disclaimer: Names, dates and places may very form one source to another, but have been stated in this biography as presented in the source. Family data taken from ancestry.com public member trees is subject to the submitter of data to ancestry.com and was not verified by this submitter. Information was cross checked from sources where possible. Sometimes facts may get clouded as information passes down the generations. The sources for information on the Oregon Wagon Train was passed on to the author, Charles Dyke, of the book ‘Story of Sioux County’ in personal interviews in about 1939 with grandchildren of the some of the families in the movement

OREGON TRAIL Wopke De Haan’s family may have been involved in a Wagon Train that left Pella Iowa in 1864 and six months later arrived in Oregon after a grueling over land trip enduring many hardships. Our web page www.iagenweb.org/sioux has set up a page with accounts of that journey. See ‘Onsite Resources’ go to Biographies ‘Wagons Ho’ the 1864-1870 Oregon Trail, to read about what this family may have as well as others who had experienced the wagon trip. Some of the families after coming back to Pella IA later joined the on going migration that led to Sioux County Iowa. In the book Sioux County History, there are actual transcriptions of vivid accounts of the Oregon Trail experience on pages 402-414 and pages 429-430. In the page 430 it mentions “in the group were families of Leendert Van Der Meer, Dirk Van Den Bos, C. Newendorp, Dirk Van Der Meer, Lutje Mars, Wopke De Haan and Hannes Klein. The eight Noteboom children who lost their parents were divided among the various relatives.

HOWEVER, upon researching information of Wopke De Haan family no mention was ever found about their journey on the Oregon Trail. All the claims were that the known children were born in Iowa. However, there was a gap in births from about 1864-1869. Possibly the whole Wopke De Haan family did go with the Oregon Wagon Train 1864. When the family got to Oregon, were disenchanted as many were, and returned to Iowa after a short stay, via the newly constructed railroads built at that time. There are no census records or other known records of that time period to investigate. In many cases with these pioneer families three major migration journeys were endured, first coming to America from Holland on a treacherous journey by sea, then the Oregon Trail with its perils 1864-1869, then the migration by another wagon train from Pella to Sioux County IA about 1869-1870.
