Eason, Frank T. 1857-1947 and Jessie Moir Family
This story was taken from pages 352-353 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg
Janet, (known only as Jessie Moir, fourth child of Jessie (Ross) and Alexander Moir, was born in Ontario, Canada, October 27, 1860. She came with her family to their new farm home in Iowa, in 1882, and taught in the rural schools before her marriage. She married Frank Thomas Eason who arrived from Marden, Kent shire, England, and had purchased land in section 36, Sherman Twp., across the road from the Alexander Moir farm. This family farmed and were very progressive, using the latest in machinery and owned a large Hart-Parr steam tractor and separator used to thrash oats which were raised in abundance at that time.
Jessie and Frank were the parents of Frank Alexander (known only as Allie) and son George Thomas Eason. Frank came to Iowa, in 1875, and followed the carpentry trade in the early years. On October 18, 1883, Jessie and Frank were married. Jessie was a quiet, soft-spoken and very gracious lady. Frank was a great conversationalist and regaled his visitors, young and old alike, with his humorous stories and jokes. They were members of the Presbyterian Church and were interested in the welfare of their church and community. The Eason’s had many friends and were well-known in the Seney and Le Mars areas. Jessie died in June, 1932, and Frank lived to be past 91 years of age. He was born November 26, 1856, son of Mary and James Eason of Marden Kent shire, England, and died December 23, 1947. Both were buried in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, Iowa.
**********
George Thomas, second son of Jessie and Frank Eason was born December 23, 1896, near Carnes, Iowa. he farmed his parent’s home place in Sherman Twp. George served in the military during World War I. He took his basic training at Camp Dodge, Des Moines, Iowa, and also spent time in 1918, at the 8th Re’ct Squadron in Fort Wayne, Detroit, Michigan. The war ended so he didn’t have to go overseas. On February 6, 1929, he married Jessie Goslinga. Her parents were Sjored and Clara (Dykstra) Goslinga of Hospers, Iowa. Jessie Goslinga was born May 17, 1905. Jessie and George were the parents of one son, Leo. George died August 10, 1950, from a sudden heart attack and was buried in Westlawn Cemetery, Orange City, Iowa.A very early settler in Sherman Twp., Section 36, land that was the very most southern and eastern corner of Sherman Twp. was homesteaded by John Eason. He was born and raised in Marden, Kent shire, England, the son of Mary (Roberts) and James Eason, brother of Frank and Stephen Eason.
In the year 1870, John and his wife Elizabeth Mercer and their young son George, and daughter named Elizabeth, came to Sioux County and took up a homestead of 80 acres. Stephen Eason had made the trip to America, with this family but had gone to Michigan, where he worked for a year before making the trip to Iowa. he obtained a homestead, 80 acres just to the north of John’s land in Section 36. John worked his land and was a lay minister serving the little congregation of Methodists in Seney. In the fall of 1871, John made mention in one of his sermons that anyone of them, including himself, could die at any time - - two weeks later, to that very day, his little son George, died of Black Diptheria. It became Stephen’s sad duty to build the coffin and excavate the burial plot. This was on John’s land, of course. Two weeks later, John himself died from the same disease. He too was interred next to his son.
Stephen made arrangements to buy the 80 acres belonging to Elizabeth Eason, making a farm of 160 acres. Later Stephen added another 80 acres on the west end of that section, making a total of 240 acres. The land was put in the name of Stean Eason, Stephen’s wife.
Elizabeth Eason and her daughter removed to Seney, where she later married Arthur Reeves of Seney.
Thus was the short life of John and his son in America, and this possibly is one of the earliest deaths recorded in Sherman Twp. In later years, Stephen wanted to move the graves to the Alton Cemetery, but was told by health authorities not to open them, due to the disease from which they died.
