This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s catholic Church book of 1883-1982 page 206. The story was transcribed for this Bios by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added. Note: Obituaries of Nicholas’s parents, Theodore Ruppert and Katherine Roden are included at the end of this narrative along with family information.

Nicholas Ruppert was born in Sandweiler, Luxemburg on October 25, 1870, and died Jun 20, 1948 in Alton, Iowa. He was the son of Theoodore and Anna Roden Ruppert. His parents immigrated to the United States and lived on a farm south of Alton.
He married Susan Hastert in David City, Nebraska on August 21, 1892. she was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 23, 1874, and died in Alton on March 18, 1958. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine Schul Hastert.After their marriage, Nicholas and Susan Ruppert lived on a farm south of Alton until retiring to Alton in 1937. They became the parent of fourteen children.
Theodora born May 26, 1894, died at Le Mars. Iowa, Leo born August 26, 1895, died in Currie Minnesota on March 4, 1969. Aloysius born December 7, 1896, died in Los Angeles Calif. September 3, 1943. Clara born July 13, 1898. Mathilda born January 19, 1900. Raymond born September 21, 1902, died in Remsen, Iowa on May 26, 1982. Olivia born December 13, 1904. Nicholas Ruppert was born October 25, 1870 Sandweiler, Luxembourg – Campagne, Luxembourg died 20 Jun 1948 Alton Sioux Iowa. His parents were Theodora Ruppert 1831-1916 and Anna Katharina Roden 1837-1903. Nicholas married Susanna Hastert 21 Aug 1893 David City, Butler Co. Nebraska.
Susanna Hastert was born December 23, 1874 Chicago, Cook, Illinois and died 18 March 1958 Alton Sioux Iowa. Her parents were Nicholas Hastert 1842-1913 and Catherine Schuh 1841-1918. Nicholas Ruppert, well known retired farmer of Alton, passed on at Sacred Heart Hospital on Father’s Day, Sunday morning June 20 at 8:40 after an illness of two weeks. He had been a patient at the hospital for six days. For several years he has been in failing health and everything possible for his comfort was done by his family.
He was born at Sandweiler, Luxembourg October 25, 1870 and was 77 years and 8 months old at the time of his death. At the age of 11 he came to the United States with his parents, four brothers and two sisters, of whom he was the last survivor. The family lived in Le Mars for six months and in 1882 moved to a farm near Alton.
August 21, 1893 Mr. Ruppert married Susan Hastert of David City, Nebraska and the couple began farming south of Alton. Fourteen children were born to them with 12 now living, namely: Mrs. Dora Welter, Le Mars; Leo, Currie, Minnesota; Clara, Mrs. James Clinton, Chicago; Mrs. Tillie Breig, St. Louis; Ray, Alton; Mrs. Olivia Radtke, Chicago; Lawrence, Alton; Catherine, Mrs. Ray Zensen, Lynwood, California; Ted and Victor, Alton; Mrs. Harlan King, Selinda, San Diego, California; Arthur, Cambridge, Nebraska; Al died in September, 1943 and one son died in infancy; there are 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Thursday morning in charge of Very Reverend Neppel. The six sons were pallbearers, as requested by their father. Ninety sorrowing relatives and friends from far and near were served dinner after the services at the Town Hall.
Mr. Ruppert was a devoted husband and parent, known as an excellent farmer and good neighbor and he will be missed by hundreds of friends. All the children and their families were present at the services except Mrs. Zensen and Mrs. King, who were from California last fall when the entire family enjoyed a reunion. Mrs. Nicholas Ruppert, early Alton resident passed on at her home Tuesday, March 18 at 4:15 P.M.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 A.M. from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. The body will be at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen until Thursday afternoon, then will be at the home here. Rosary will be held at 7:30 Thursday evening in the Ruppert home.
Susan Hastert was born in Chicago, later moving with her parents and family to David City, Nebraska, where she was married to Nicholas Ruppert of Alton. The couple farmed near Alton, later retiring to a home in Alton where Mr. Ruppert died in 1948.
Twelve children survive their mother, namely: Mrs. Dora Welter, Le Mars; Leo, Currie, Minnesota; Mrs. Clara Clinton, Mrs. Mathilda Breig, Mrs. Olive Radtke, all of Chicago; Raymond, Alton; Mrs. Ray (Catherine) Zensen, Lynwood, California; Lawrence, Ted and Victor, all of Alton; Mrs. Harlan (Selinda) King, Phoenix, Arizona; Arthur of Rock Rapids.
Preceding her in death were two sons: Al residing in California, and a son who died in infancy.
Mrs. Ruppert fell and broke her hip in 1954. Some weeks ago she had another fall and since then had been quite ill. She was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church, a kind mother and a good neighbor. Mrs. Zensen is expected from California for the funeral but Mrs. King has just been released from the hospital after a major operation and may not be able to come from Phoenix.
Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Peter Hastert, Los Angeles, three sisters: Mrs. Leo Kettler and Mrs. Lena Shreff, Le Mars, and Mrs. May Chroeder, Dearboon, Michigan.******
OBITUARY of Nicholas’s father Theodore Ruppert 1831-1916
Alton Democrat issue of 8 July 1916. Death Roll. Sunday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, Theodore Ruppert passed away at the home of his son, P. M. Ruppert, 800 Park St., at the ripe old age of 85 years and five months, the cause of his death being old age. All of his surviving children and many of his grandchildren were at his bedside at the time of his demise.
Theodore Ruppert was born in Sandweiler, Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, Europe on January 25, 1831, where he grew to manhood and received his education. On January 29, 1860 he was united in marriage to Anna K. Roden, of the same place, who preceded him in death 13 years ago. To this union seven children were born: P. M. Ruppert and P. D. Ruppert of LeMars, Nicholas Ruppert of Alton, John Ruppert of Currie, Minn., Mrs. James Schreier of Avoca, Minn., and Sister M. Theodor. member of the Franciscan Order, Dubuque, Ia. Dominis Ruppert, another son, died at Colorado Springs, Colo., November 4, 1910. He also leaves forty-five grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Mr. Ruppert lived in Sandweiler, following his trade as cabinet maker, until August, 1881, when he with his family emigrated to America, settling on a farm in Sioux county near Alton. Here he lived for eleven years, when he retired from active work and moved to LeMars where he resided until the death of his wife in March, 1905. Since then he has made his home with his children.----LeMars Sentinel.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's church at 10 o'clock, Rev. F.X. Feuerstein in charge. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. John Ruppert, Mr. and Mrs. John Schrier, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Bonderan, Mat Ruppert, Mrs. Mary Ruppert and Johnnie Ruppert of Currie, Minn., John Ruppert of Granville, Dan Ruppert of Colorado Springs, Mat Ruppert and Mrs. Eugene Griffin of Sioux City, Sister M. Theadora and Sister M. Mathilda of Dubuque, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Ruppert and children and Mrs. Bonneville of Alton, and Mrs. M. Schroeder of Oyens.

Nick Ruppert, twenty-eight years old, of 609 Water St., Sioux City, died Saturday in a hospital as a result of injuries received when he fell 165 feet from a viaduct which he was painting at Boone. The spot from which he fell will be painted black although the rest of the structure will be given a red coat. Weak ropes caused the death of Mr. Ruppert. The funeral was held Wednesday at St. Boniface's Catholic church.

Mrs. Katherine Ruppert died at her home in Le Mars at one o'clock Wednesday at the age of sixty-six Years from dropsy with which she had suffered for about a year. She was born in Sandweiler, Luxemburg and was married there to Theodore Ruppert—coming to America about twenty-two years ago; They settled on a farm southeast of Alton, where they lived until ten years ago when they moved to Le Mars, She leaves besides a sorrowing husband seven children. They are Sister Theodora of Dyersville, Mrs. John Schreier of Avoca Minnesota, Matt and John at Currie, Dominick of Colorado Springs Colorado and Nic and Peter of Alton. She also leaves a sister—Mrs. M. P. Ruppert of Currie Minnesota. Funeral services are to be held Saturday at ten.
