This story was taken from pages 545-546 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg .

Pieter Van Peursem was the son of George Ernest and Gerritje (Pluim) Van Peursem. He was born in the Netherlands, in 1809, and married Janneke Bos. He immigrated to the United States with his wife and seven children, coming to the Pella area in 1856. She died of cholera about 1859, and was buried in the Pella cemetery, site unknown. Pieter made his home with his daughter in Sioux County in 1874. The story of the seven children was told in the following newspaper account printed in the Alton Democrat of February 26, 1925.

Seven brothers and sisters came to America, on a sailboat in 1856; all are still alive, and are seventy years old or more; all are still living in Iowa. All are healthy and active, and they have a total of 220 descendants, an average of more than 31 each. This is a family record which citizens of Orange City do not believe can be beaten.

The seven have lived a total of 532 years. The boat that brought them to the new world was so slow that forty days were spent in making the passage. The mother died two years after the family arrival in this country. The family came to Iowa at once, and settled at Pella. Between 1870 and 1873, five brothers and sisters became homesteaders in Sioux County. One of them, Mrs. Hassleman, returned to Pella, during the grasshopper days. All are farmers.

The eldest is George Van Peursem, of Maurice, Iowa, who is 82 years old. He has seven children, 36 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Mrs. G. De Jong, of Orange City is 80 years old, and is the mother of seven children, grandmother of 29, and great grandmother of two. The next in point of age is Mrs. H. Hassleman, of Pella, who is the mother of seven, grandmother of seventeen and great grandmother of one. Wm. Van Peursem, also of Pella, is 76 years old. He has six children, seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Maas Van Peursem, of this place, has seven children and twenty six grandchildren. The remaining two are, Aart Van Peursem, Pella, 72; six children and four grandchildren; Mrs. B. Van Roekel of Orange City, 70, ten children and twenty grandchildren.

Within the last five years four of the brothers and sisters have been robbed by death of husband or wife. The oldest and the youngest still are living with their first mates, and one, Maas, has been twice married. The eldest, George Van Peursem and his wife, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their wedding on March 3. One of their sons is a missionary in Arabia, and a grandson of Mrs. De Jong will become a missionary this year.

Pieter is buried in the Orange City cemetery.
George was born July 13, 1842, died June 6, 1929, married Mientje Kars.
Jannigje was born September 30, 1844, died September 11, 1928, married Gerrit De Jong.
Gerritje was born October 3, 1846, died December 3, 1932, married Hermanus J. Hassleman.
Willem was born November 3, 1848, died 1939, married Sara Witzenberg.
Maas was born April 5, 1850, died April 4, 1938, married Sebia Brinks and Fanny Grandstra.
Aart was born May 12, 1852, died 1920, married Elizabeth Rempe.
Neeltje was born August 1,1854, died 1933, married Baart Van Roekel.

The Numerous crowd today at the funeral of the late, generally esteemed father, Van Peursem, proved the impression that he left behind a truly Christian life. Once again one of those pillars of the church, one of those old Dutchmen has been taken from the scene of life. Which one of our younger generation will take his place. So go those old settlers! Those pious, whose godliness and faith were tested by persecution in the Netherlands! Long may their memory remain with us. If a loss were only appreciated, it would be a shame for those who are left to bear more of that esteem which they are so most worthy of. The funeral oration delivered by Father Bolks at the funeral ceremony was striking and appropriate.

Find A Grave has a picture of her tomb stone Janeka Van Peursem 1815-1858. Jennek ‘Janeka’ Bos was born 8 May 1815 Ede, Ede, Gelderland, Netherlands died 8 Oct 1858 age 43 at Pella, Marion County IA is buried in Graceland Cemetery Pella IA. Block 5 Lot 17.
