Born: November 19, 1867 Died: June 30, 1953
LOU NOETHE, FORMER SUPERVISOR DIES AT ALTON TUESDAY--WAS ONLY DEMOCRATIC MEMBER ON BOARD FOR 12 YEARS
Louis Noethe, 85, former county supervisor from this district, died at his home in Alton Tuesday, June 30, at 10:06 P.M. after a long illness resulting from a stroke in 1942 which gradually incapacitated him. However, he was about in his wheel chair until five years before his passing.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The body will be at the Noethe home this Wednesday after 6:30 P.M.
Louis Noethe was born November 19, 1867 at New Vienna, Iowa and came to the Alton vicinity when a young boy with his pioneer parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John M. Noethe. He was married April 28, 1903 to Susan Haupert by the late Reverend F.J. Brune, the wedding taking place at the local St. Mary’s Church. The couple quietly observed their golden wedding in April of this year.
They farmed near Alton for several years and then bought a farm five miles south of Alton now occupied by the Paul Van Arb family. In August 1907, he received a serious spinal injury when he became dizzy and fell from a straw stack during threshing. For many months he was in hospitals at Milwaukee, Le Mars and Hot Springs. Though given no hope by medical authorities for recovery, he refused to give up and through courage, faith and determination he won his way back to health activity.
In 1918 the family moved to a commodious new home in Alton. He served as city councilman for some years and later was elected supervisor, serving for 12 years, or until it had become difficult for him to get around. He still did not give up, but however painfully kept on his feet until but a few years ago. He had the devoted care of his family, assisted by such good friends at Ted Wagner and Frank Allen, who aided him in getting into his car and wheel chair.
Surviving are his wife and five children, all of whom were at his bedside during his last days. They are Mrs. Paul Von Arb (Barbara), Mrs. C.B. Schneider (Stella) of Alton; Dr. Edward A. Noethe, Slayton, Minnesota; Mrs. George Henrich (Lillian) of Alton and Mrs. Magnus Konz (Sylveria) of Hospers; 25 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are one of his three brothers, Andrew of Sutherland, John and Jake having preceded him in death; three sisters: Mrs. James Konz(Anna) of Alton; Mrs. P.M. Konz, Elkton, South Dakota and Mrs. Will Wolf (Elizabeth) of Alton; one step-sister, Miss Louise Noethe of Alton.
He will long be remembered as one of the outstanding citizens of this community, always willing and ready to give help when needed, a man largely self-educated and possessing unusual judgment and ability. One of his great hobbies was baseball, and in his last years he continued his keen interest in the sport through listening to broadcasts of the major league games in which he was familiar with all the players.OBITUARY of Susan Mrs. Louis Noethe
