There are many articles on the Jerry Murphy family starting 1901 that can be viewed on https://siouxcounty.advantage-preservation.com .

OBITUARY of Jeremiah Murphy 1834-1915

From the Saturday, September 4, 1915 Alton Democrat:
This community was shocked when the news was passed around Monday that Jeremiah Murphy had died suddenly. He had reached the ripe old age of eighty-one years but he seemed as hale and hearty as ever. Heart trouble took him very suddenly on Monday afternoon, as he was coming into the house from his little garden to read the daily paper as was his afternoon custom.
Deceased was born at Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada on January 3d, 1834. When still a mere boy he came to the United States, settling with his parents in Wisconsin. On February 15th, 1863, at Clyman, Dodge county, Wisconsin, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Hogan. Mr. Murphy joined the Union forces and was under fire a number of times. After serving out his enlistment, Mr. and Mrs. Murphy engaged in farming in Wisconsin. In 1876 they came to Dakota Territory, locating on a homestead, which he still owns, in Turner county. He opened a general store at Swan Lake, now known as Hurley, and operated this store for many years. During the early years of his business career he had to haul his merchandise overland from Yankton, a distance of thirty-five miles. At Hurley, S. D., he was actively identified with the G. A. R. post E. S. McCook No. 31, serving in many official capacities and he was also a member of the Union Veterans Union, an organization made up entirely of old soldiers of the Civil War, who had been actually under fire.
Jeremiah Murphy leaves to mourn, a host of friends in Alton and his old South Dakota home. He was a kind, bright, cheerful old soul; it was a pleasure to meet him on the street; we will miss him. He is survived by his aged widow, who suffers extremely from this sudden blow, and two sons and three daughters — W. J. Murphy of Sioux City, F. J. Murphy of Sturgis, S. D., and Mrs. E. S. Henrich, Mrs. Margaret Countryman and Mrs. John A. List of Alton. He is also survived by a brother, F. W. Murphy of Hurley, S. D., and a sister, Mrs. Carl Hitchcock of Minneapolis.
The funeral services were held from St. Mary's church on Thursday, Very Rev. F. J. Brune conducting the services which were largely attended. The following out-of-town relatives and friends attended the services: Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Murphy of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Murphy of Sturgis, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Murphy, J. T. Hogan and Miss B. Hogan of Hurley, S. D.; Mrs. Pool of Parker, S. D.; Mrs. Cowan of Alcester, S. D.; Frank E. Henrich of Lennox, S. D.; J. J. Dolan of Beresford, S. D., and Miss Helen Pool of Parker, S. D.

OBITUARY of Mary Mrs. Jeremiah Murphy 1843-1933
Source: Alton Democrat (12-8-1933) Born: March 8, 1843 Died: December 1, 1933
MRS. MARY MURPHY PIONEER EARLY DAYS IN THE WEST Mrs. Jeremiah Murphy quietly passed away from this life Friday evening, December 1, after hardly more than a day’s illness, her condition not becoming serious until Friday. Although 96 years of age last March Mrs. Murphy retained her keen mental faculties till the last and even supervised the preparation of the family Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday.
Widow of a civil war veteran, pioneer of early Dakota days, her life has covered an eventful span of history such as few have experienced. Mother of nine children, of whom but three survive, her brave spirit and devoted faith withstood every vicissitude until she softly slipped away to join those who have gone before.
Mary A. Hogan was born March 8, 1843 at Toronto, Canada. At the age of six she accompanied her parents to the new country to the southwest, settling at Juneau, Wisconsin, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to Jeremiah Murphy after the latter returned from the service in the Union army in the Civil War, for which he volunteered in 1861. The couple lived at Juneau until 1876 when they went west to Hurley, South Dakota, encountering the hardships which marked pioneer life in these early days. In November, 1901, the family came to Alton. On 1915 Mr. Murphy passed on, and four sons now rest beside him in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Two daughters also passed on in early childhood while the family still lived in Dakota.
The three daughters surviving are: Mrs. E.S Henrich (Mary), Mrs. Margaret Countryman, and Mrs. J.A. List (Gertrude), all of Alton. There is one sister living, Miss Bridget Hogan of Hurley, South Dakota, who came for the services Thursday, and there are twenty grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.
Funeral services at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Tuesday morning were conducted by Very Reverend M. A. Schemel and interment was in Saint Mary’s Cemetery beside her husband and sons.
Although she reached so advanced an age and for some years was not strong enough to join in usual activities, Mrs. Murphy did not seem old in the ordinary sense, because she retained her interest in family, friends and events of the community and nation. She was truly remarkable woman, whose life was devoted to the service of others, surmounting troubles and cares which would have overcome a less brave and noble spirit.
