Mousel, Ferdinand 1859-1937 & Margaret Hoffman Family

This family history was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added. Spellings of names, dates and places are listed as found in the cited source.

Ferdinand Mousel, a pioneer settler of Sioux County, was born at St. Donatus, Jackson County Iowa on January 25, 1859. He married Margaret Hoffman at St. Donatus in 1881 and moved westward at that time to Le Mars, Iowa where they farmed for three years. The family then moved to White Lake, South Dakota where he homesteaded. After seven years, the family moved to Alton, Iowa where Mr. Mousel farmed until his retirement in 1922.

Margaret Hoffman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hoffman, was born at St. Donatus, Jackson County, Iowa on September 10, 1857. the Mousels were the parents of twelve children: Frank of Alton; John of Dell Rapids So. Dak; Mary (Mrs. Peter Hourscht) of Trosky Minn; Jennie (Mrs. Ben Plathe) of Granville IA; Teresa (Mrs. John Konz) of Alton; Susan (Mrs. John Pottebaum) of Alton; Kate (Mrs. Leo Hansen ) of Dell Rapids; Anna (Mrs. Math Konz) of Alton; Joseph of Alton; Emma (Mrs. Joe Konz) of Alton; Leo of Alton; and Pauline (Mrs. Chas. Homan) of Slayton Minn. All are deceased except Pauline. (as of 1983)

Mrs. Mousel passed away August 7, 1926 at age 69 years. Mr. Mousel passed away March 21,1937 at age 78 years. Burials are in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Ferdinand Mousel family were devoted members of St. Mary’s church in Alton.

Felix Ferdinand Mousel was born 25 Jan 1859 St. Donatus, Jackson County, Iowa and died 21 Mar 1937 Alton, Sioux County, Iowa. His parents were Jacobus Mousel born 1831 Luxmebourg and died 1908 Chicago IL, and Anne Catherine Pauline Capesius born 1836 Luxemboug and died 1901 Chicago IL. Ferdinand Mousel married Margaret Hoffmann 23 Nov 1880 St. Donatus, Jackson, Iowa.

Ferdinand’s death certificate adds his parents, Jacob Mousel and Paulina Capasus, both born in Luxenberg; he died at 10 a.m. March 21, 1937; cause, congestive heart failure and arteriosclerosis, onset June 1936.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his parents as Jacobus Mousel (1831-1908) and Paulina Capesius Mousel (1836-1901), and also includes a photo of him, as well as one of his headstone.

Margaret Hoffmann was born 10 Sep 1857 St. Donatus, Jackson county, Iowa and died 7 Aug 1926 Alton Iowa. 1925 Iowa census has her parents as Charles Hoffman 1843 and Susan Soux(Lux) 1847 both born Luxembourg. Find A Grave has her parents as Karl Dominick Hoffmann and Susanna Lux 1835-1915 both died at Alta Vista, Chickasaw County, Iowa.

Six children listed were: Sylvester, Lawrence, Emmett, Cletus, Florentine Penning, and Cecil Peter Mousel.

2. Mary Mousel born 9 May 1884 White Lake Aurora County South Dakota died 10 May 1957 Pipestone County Minnesota, buried in St. Leo’s Catholic cemetery Pipestone MN. She married Peter Hourscht. Their children were – Clarence, Edmund, Edgar and Marcella Baumberger.

From the Alton Democrat, March 26, 1937: FERD. MOUSEL OF ALTON IS GONE BEYOND -WELL KNOWN FARM OWNER DIES SUNDAY
Mr. Ferdinand Mousel, pioneer settler of Sioux county, passed away suddenly at his home on Sunday morning March 21, at 10 A.M. after a very brief illness. He was 78 years and 2 months of age. He was born at St. Donatus, Jackson County, January 25, 1859. He married Margaret Hoffman at St. Donatus in 1881 and moved westward at that time to Le Mars where he farmed for three years. He then moved to White Lake, S.D. where he homesteaded. After seven years he moved to Alton where he made his home up to the time of his death.

His wife, Margaret Hoffman, preceded him in death, passing away August 7, 1927. On September 10, 1930 he married Susan Hansen who survives him. He was the father of twelve children of which ten survive, Frank of Alton, John of Dell Rapids, S.D., Mrs. Heirscht of Trotsky, Minn., Mrs. Ben Plathe of Granville, Mrs. John Konz of Alton, Mrs. John Pottebaum of Alton, Joe of Alton, Mrs. Charles Homan of Alton, Mrs. Joe Konz of Alton and Leo; two daughters preceded their father in death, namely, Mrs. Leo Hansen and Mrs. Math. Konz. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Peter Munning of Matawan, New Jersey; Mrs. Harry Fries of Chicago, and Mrs. Emma Koller of Chicago.
Ferdinand Mousel was known and admired by all his friends as a man of sterling character; his smiling happy countenance will never be forgotten by any who ever associated with him. He was one of the early members of St. Mary’s Catholic church and since his retirement from active farm life fifteen years ago has been a daily attendant at mass. His splendid personality can best be expressed by the tribute paid him by a prominent business man of Alton when he said: “I feel honored to have had the privilege of knowing him.”
Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery was preceded by solemn requiem high mass in St. Mary’s Catholic church at 9 A.M. with Rev. M. A. Schemel, celebrant, Rev. Henry Pick, deacon, and Rev. Reising sub-deacon. Pall bearers were Nic Hansen, Leo Hansen, Mike Hansen, Pete Hansen, Ben Hansen and George Hansen.

Margaret Hoffman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas Hoffmann born at St. Donntus, Jackson Co. Sept 10, 1857 married at St. Donntus to Ferdinand Mousel Nov 23, 1880, died Aug 7, 1936 at Alton. After their marriage they farmed near LeMars IA until 1884 when they moved to White Lake SD. there they resided for six years. In 1890 they came to Sioux County where they farmed until 1922 when they retired and moved to town to spend the remaining days of their lives, where she died Saturday at 2:15 after a few hours illness of heart failure.
Her life was devoted mostly to her family at home. She was a devoted member of St. Mary’s church and also a member of the Rosary Society.

Funeral services were conducted at St. Mary’s church Tuesday morning at 9 O’clock, Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by the pastor, Very Rev. Brouno, assisted by Rev. Sturm of Granville and H. Pick of Alton. The sermon was given by the pastor, who also conducted the services at the cemetery. The pallbearers were Louis Noethe, Jake Klein, Nick Croat, Geo. Friedmann, O. J. Lieb, and M. Kellen.

She is survived by her husband and ten children, two children having preceded her in death. She also leaves 51 grandchildren to mourn her death. The children are Frank of Alton; John, Dell Rapids; Mary Mrs. Peter Hourscht Dell Rapids; Jennie Mrs. Ben Plathe Granville; Theresa Mrs. John Konz Alton; Susan Mrs. John Pottebaum Alton; Joseph Alton; Paulina Mrs. Chas Homan Alton; Emma Mrs. Joseph Konz Alton Leo of Alton, The two following preceded her in death: Kate Mrs. Leo Hansen, who died in 1914. Anna Mrs. Math Konz, who died in 1924.

She is also survived by the following sisters and brothers: Nick Hoffmann of White Lake SD, Mrs. J. P. Arend of Parkston SD, Theresa Martin and Peter Hoffmann of Alta Vista IA; Anna Hoffmann of Stacyville IA; Mrs. Frank Majeres and Nick Hoffmann of Remsen IA, Mrs. Mike Hintges of Bellevue IA, All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Mike Hintges who was unable to attend on account of illness in the family.
