DeJager, Barend 1858 -1927 & #1. Roelofje and #2. Janna Nyhof Families
This story was taken from page 301 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg. Spelling, dates and places were left as in the cited source.
Barend De Jager was born in the Netherlands on October, 25, 1858. His parents were John and Gertie (Beemer) De Jager. What his occupation there was is presumed as farming. In 1890, he married Roelofje Nyhof. They had four children; Anna (Mrs. Arie Drost), Jennie (Mrs. Fred De Jong), Gertie (Mrs. Lane Van Duyn) and Hattie (Mrs. Manus Schreur). All these are now deceased.
A few years before 1900, Roelofje’s parents, the Nyhofs, immigrated to America, and wrote many glowing letters about their new country, which gave Roelofje a desire to go too, and Brend agreed. So in the year 1900, they too came across the ocean, settling west of Orange City, where Barend worked as a hired man for a man named Pietenpol. They later moved to an acreage one mile west and ½ mile north of the Million Dollar Corner and worked for the Vande Brakes.
It was there, their house with all their personal possessions burned down. Then for a time they lived with Roelofje’s parents, the Nyhofs.
After they came to the US, their daughter Rena (Mrs. Peter Faber) was born May 30, 1901. She lives in Sioux City, with two of her daughters. At the time of this writing she is now 88 years old.
Later the family moved to a farm two miles west and ¾ north of Maurice, where they farmed some of the then Culligan land.
On April 24, 1904, a son Henry was born. He is now also deceased, and a year later on April 9, 1905, a daughter Susan was born. She married Henry Smit (now deceased). She still lives in Lynden, Washington.
On February 11, 1909, his wife Roelofje passed away. She was plagued with asthma. In 1910 Barend married Roelofje’s sister, Janna Nyhof and they had four children; Rhodus (now deceased), Rose (Mrs. Albert De Weerd) living near Sioux Center, Henrietta (Mrs. Wilbert Van De Keift) living in Sioux Center, and Johanna (Mrs. Wm. Vlietstra, Sr.) living in Orange City.
There are a host of descendants scattered from coast to coast and across the United States. The Schreurs in the Milaca, Minnesota, area. The Smits in the Washington area and most of the rest in this immediate and surrounding area.
In 1918, when the war flu was an epidemic, the family suffered much sadness as on October 22, their son-in-law, Lane Van Duyn, passed away. On November 25, mother De Jager and on December 27, all of the same year, their daughter Annie. Great was their sorrow. Barend passed away on June 6, 1927.
