Klein, Jacob 1851-1936 and Mary Haupert Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book 1883-1983, page not numbered. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added. Spellings, dates and places were recorded herein as found in the cited sources.

Jacob Klein Family
Jacob Klein was born March 27, 1851 at Tadler, Luxembourg. Jacob was only two years old when his father died. He then moved with his mother and older brother to Niederfeulen. His mother later remarried and Jacob lived with his mother and stepfather at Niederfeulen until he was 18 years old.

In 1869, he left Luxembourg and came to America and settled in Chicago, IL. Where his older brother had already established residence. He lived in Chicago at the time of the disastrous fire in 1871.

He came to Sioux County in 1878. On August 1, 1883, he purchased two parcels of land – 80 acres at $8.80 per acre and 40 acres at $13.20 per acre in East Orange Township, southeast of Alton.

In 1884 on January 20, he married Mary Haupert. Mary was born in St. Donatus, Iowa on June 30 1863. Jacob and Mary Klein were the parents of twelve children: Ann (Mrs. Ted Huss); Margaret (Mrs. Nick Hansen); Mike; Elizabeth (Sr Verna); Charles; Matt; Bernard; Mary; Lena; Christine; Ray; Sylvine (Mrs. Joe Schaul). Only three of Jacob and Mary Kleins’ family are still living. (1983) They are Christine, Ray and Sylvine Schaul.

Jacob Klein died on February 13, 1938. Five years after Jacob’s death, Mary Haupert Klein died February 3, 1941.

Jacob Klein was born 27 Mar 1851 Tadler, Wiltz, Diekirch, Luxembourg, Germany and died 13 Feb 1936 Alton Sioux Iowa. He was the son of Michel Klein 1812-1853 and Mary Muller 1820-1895. He married Mary Haupert 1863-1941 on 20 Jan 1884 Boyden Iowa.

Mary Haupert was born 30 Jun 1863 St. Donatus Iowa and died 3 Feb 1941 Alton Sioux Iowa Her parents were Nicholas Haupert 1840-1908 buried Granville IA and Margaret Krantz 1841- 1883 Granville IA. Jacob and Mary were the parents of 12 children.

5. Michael Klein born 8 May 1891 Alton, IA died 16 Dec 1941 Adrian Nobles, MN. He married Margaret J. Evert Bernard 1892-1972 Their children, three out of seven were named – Mary C. Klein 1917, Joseph M. Klein 1918-1987, James F. Klein 1921. Rest of children listed as private on ancestry.com site.

6. Elizabeth Klein (Sister Mary Verna) born 5 Jan 1893 IA died 21 Feb 1967. She was of Worthing Iowa at the time of her mother’s death.

7. Charles Klein born 10 Oct 1894 IA died 22 Nov 1918 Alton, IA. Find A Grave lists Charles John Klein born 10 Oct 1894 at Granville IA, died 22 Nov 1918 Alton IA, buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery Alton IA. Parents Jacob and Mary Klein. The Alton Democrat of Nov 23, 1918 carried the death notice of Charles Klein son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Klein of this vicinity passed away at this home Friday morning at 4 o’clock after an attack of influenza of about ten days. He is a young man of 24 years.

8. Mathias S. Klein born 5 Apr 1896 Alton IA died 30 Aug 1957 Alton IA buried in St. Mary’s cemetery. He married Margaret Streff. His obituary is posted on this web page, easier access if look under surname Streff. He was a prominent gas station owner in Alton. Children son, Ensign Dale Klein of Jacksonville, North Dakota, a daughter, Mrs. Eldon Hatting (Diana) of Sioux City,

9. Mary ‘Christine’ Klein born 3 Apr 1898 East Orange Township Sioux County IA died Sep 1986 Alton IA buried in St. Mary’s cemetery Alton IA. Her obituary is in the Sioux County Capital of Thursday Sep 18, 1986 as Christine Klein. She owned and operated Klein Beauty Shop for a number of years and worked for Dr Murphy.

10. Bernard Klein born 23 Jul 1900 IA died 14 Aug 1902. There was no Alton paper found for the week of Aug 14th to further explain his death. His mother’s obit states died in infancy.

11. Raymond J. Klein born 4 Nov 1903 Alton IA died 19 Nov 1994 Alton IA buried in St. Mary’s cemetery. He married Evelyn Dysthe born 1932- 1979 at Sioux City. They had a daughter Marlene Mrs. Robert Sailstad of Duluth Mn. His obit was in the Siouxland Press of Nov 22, 1884.

12. Sylvine Klein born 21 Sep 1905 Alton IA died 31 Mary 2002 Dubuque IA. She married Joe Schaul he was born1903 died 1994 Alton IA. They had a daughter Carol Mrs. Henry Otis of Minneapolis and a son Gene and Shella Schaul of Dubuque.

PIONEER SAW GREAT CHICAGO FIRE OF 1871--JACOB KLEIN CAME HERE IN YEAR OF 1877

Jacob Klein, one of the early settlers of this community, died Thursday morning February 13 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City.
Solemn Mass of Requiem was celebrated Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Church. A Nephew, Reverend L.N. Klein of Leeds, Iowa, was celebrant of the Mass; Reverend M.A. Schemel of Alton, Dean; and Reverend Ells of Granville, Sub-deacon. Interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mr. Klein was born at Tadler, Luxembourg in 1851 He came to the United States in 1869, making his home in Chicago until 1877. He then came to Iowa and settled in Sioux County in the Alton vicinity, where he was a prominent farmer until his retirement fifteen years ago.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Haupert Klein; three sons, Mike P. Klein, Adrian, Minnesota, Matt and Raymond, Alton; and seven daughters: Mrs. Theodore Huss, Faulkton, South Dakota; Sister Mary Verne, Roseville, Iowa; Mrs. Joe Schaul, Hospers, Iowa; Mrs. Nic Hansen, Mary, Lena and Christine, Alton; also by twenty-five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two sons, Charles and Bernard, preceded him in death.

Those from out of town who came to honor the memory of the sturdy pioneer were, besides the children: Joe, Jim, Frank and Fred Klein, Adrian, Minnesota; Julia Ernster, R.N. Minneapolis, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Klein and son, Nicholas, Math Haupert and Ray Portz, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Klein, Mr. and Mrs. John Ney and son Lawrence; Ted Klein, Edward Penning, all of Granville; Mrs. Viola Goebel and daughter Eunice, Sioux City; Miss Theresa Marx, Mrs. Mathilda Lammers, Granville. Pallbearers were two grandsons, Joseph Hansen and Joseph Klein, and four nephews: Anton, Pete Ted and Nicholas Klein.

Mr. Klein lived near Chicago at the time of the disastrous fire there on October 8 and 9,1871, that nearly destroyed the entire city, and his stories of that terrible event were most interesting. He was one of the Alton‘s most valued citizens and his death was a blow to his many hundreds of friends and admirers. The pioneer lived through some of some of Sioux County’s most trying times without losing his optimistic and cheery outlook on life. The sympathy of all who knew him goes out to the bereaved family.

Victim Of Heart Attack Sunday Night, Born in St. Donatus, Iowa, In 30 June 1867. (or1863)
Mrs. Mary Klein, beloved pioneer Alton resident, passed on Monday morning after a heart attack suffered the previous night. Although not in robust health for the past two years, she was about as usual and had been especially well until stricken during the night Sunday.

Mary Haupert was born at St. Donatus, June 30th, 1867 and came with her pioneer parents to Sioux County when she was still a small child. On January 20th 1884 she was married to Jacob Klein, son of another pioneer family, the wedding having taken place at Sheldon.

She was the mother of twelve children, of whom ten are living, namely, Anna Mrs. Ted Huss of Faulkton SD; Margaret Mrs. Nick Hansen of Alton, Sister Mary Verna of Worthing Iowa; Mink Klein of Adrian MN; Sylvine Mrs. Joe Schaul of Hospers; Matt and Ray Klein of Alton; Mary, Lena and Christine at home. One son, Bernard died in infancy; another Charles grew to manhood and passed on during the influenza epidemic in 1918. Mrs. Klein is survived also by 28 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; by one brother, Matt Haupert of Granville and one sister Mrs. Mary Ernster of Sisseton, SD.

The family lived on the home farm east of Alton until twenty years ago, when they moved to a comfortable and spacious new home in town. Seven years ago Mr. and Mrs. Klein celebrated their golden wedding with a family reunion and open house. Two years later Mr. Klein passed on, surrounded by his devoted family.

Mrs. Klein was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Mary’s church. Her home, family ad church were the center of her affections, but she was never too busy to do a kindness to one outside the family circle and her memory will be revered by many friends.

Solemn requiem high mass will be held in memory of the pioneer mother this Thursday morning at 9:30 o’clock. The Rev. Father L. W. Klein of Leeds, nephew of the later Mr. Klein will officiate, assisted by the pastor, the Very Rev. J. M. Neppel, Msgr, M. A. Schemel of Remsen and the Rev. Reising of Granville.

Sister Mary Verna arrived here Tuesday morning from Worthing and other members of the family and relatives are arriving as we write this, to honor the memory of this well loved mother.
