This story was taken from page 333 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Jake Den Herder was the eldest son of Gerrit John and Jannetje (Mol) Den Herder. He was born March 3, 1888, at Nunspeet, in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. At the age of two he immigrated to the United States along with his parents and 2½ year old brother. The family settled on a farm two miles west of Sioux Center, where he grew to manhood. On February 25, 1916, he married Fannie Schutt, who was born January 29, 1885, to Dirk and Maggie (Punt) Schutt, near Sioux Center.
They began their married life on a farm four miles west of Sioux Center, and in 1919 moved to the farm west of Maurice. There the farming operation consisted of raising corn, oats, alfalfa and soybeans. Livestock feeding included milk cows, hogs and chickens. Father’s pride was his buckskin horses which he raised himself.
They became the parents of four children: Jeanette, Mrs. Wilbur De Jong of Orange City; Gladys, Mrs. Kenneth De Pree, of Maurice; Myra, Mrs. Jim Vlieger, of Maurice; and George, of Luverne, Minnesota. All attended the Maurice Public School and graduated from high school there.
The Den Herders were active members of the First Reformed Church at Maurice, where he served as a deacon and later an elder. She was a member of the Sunshine Circle and later of the Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the Ladies’ Farm Bureau and of the local Woman’s Club in the early thirties. In the summer of 1954, they moved into the town of Maurice. Mrs. Den Herder died June 21, 1955, and Mr. Den Herder died November 16, 1964. Both are buried in the Sherman Township Cemetery.
