This story was taken from page 304 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. De Jager, Hesel and Gysje Vellinga
Hesel De Jager homesteaded on a farm southwest of Orange City. As a young boy of 18 years, Peter (the oldest) had to take over the duties of farming when his father died, leaving a family of one daughter and six sons. Netherlands birth record lists Hessel Pieters de Jager born on 7 Aug 1844 at Menaldum, Friesland. His father was Pieter Andries de Jager and mother was Antje Hessels Poelstra. His father, Pieter Andries de Jager was 25 yrs born about 1812 and mother, Antje Hessels Poelstra was 22 yrs born about 1815 when they married 17 May 1837 at Menaldum Friesland. Mrs. Gerrit Kroeze died at her home Tuesday evening at about seven o'clock after months of struggle with consumption. Deceased was thirty tree years old and was married fourteen years ago. She leaves her husband and seven children, her mother Mrs. M. Verheul and her brothers Evert, Andrew, William Martin and Ring De Jager. The funeral services will be held this Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Chr. Ref. church and will be conducted by Rev. Van Wyk.3. Edward De Jager 1876-1957

Born: 9-7-1876 Died: 12-20-1957. Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Orange City Monday for Ed De Jager, 81, life-long resident of Sioux county and retired farmer, who died at the Grossmann hospital at Orange City Friday following a few days illness. Services were conducted by the Rev. H. Colenbrander and burial was made at Orange City. Mr. De Jager was born September 7, 1876, at Alton, the son of Hessel De Jager and Grace Vellinga De Jager. He was married March 16, 1900 to Minnie Jansma. They farmed in the Maurice and Orange City areas until 1930 when they moved to Orange City. Survivors include his wife; a son, Pierce, of Orange City; three daughters, Grace (Mrs. John C. Muyskens) of Hospers, Mildred (Mrs. Vernon Schoep) of Orange City and Lois (Mrs. Ivan Stienstra) of Spencer; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Peter of Rock Valley, Martin and Ring of Orange City. Last Rites Held Saturday, Sept. 12 For Andrew De Jager
Funeral services for Andrew De Jager were held Saturday at the home of Ed De Jager, and at the First Reformed church. Dr. Henry Colenbrander officiated. Mr. De Jager died suddenly September 9, at the age of nearly 80 years. He was born on a farm near Orange City, Sept. 26, 1873 and was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hessel De Jager, a sister Etje (Mrs. Gerrit Kroeze) and a brother, William. Since the death of his mother 27 years ago, he had made his home with his brothers, Peter of Maurice, and Edward, Martin and Ring De Jager of Orange City.5. Willem De Jager 1881-1935

Born:4-19-1881 Died: 4-9-1935 Will DeJager, well known Maurice farmer, died Tuesday morning, April 9th, at an Orange City hospital following an operation for appendicitis the preceding Saturday. Funeral services were held last Thursday and interment was made at Orange City. Mr. DeJager was born near Orange City April 19, 1881. In 1909 he married Anna Langerack of Maurice and two daughters were born to this union. Obituary - Martin H. De Jager, 95, Orange City, died Thursday, February 8, in the Orange City hospital. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. M. S. Jorritsma officiated. Burial was in West Lawn Cemetery under the direction of the Van Gelder Funeral Home. Mr. De Jager was born September 20, 1883, at Maurice. He married Gertie Siebersma March 1, 1905, at Orange City. They farmed until 1944, when they moved to Orange City where he worked as a carpenter until 1960 when he retired. Mrs. D Jager died March 13, 1969. Mr. De Jager was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. Survivors include six daughters: Mrs. Henry (Grace) De Vos., Mrs. Sam (Lucy) Ennema, Mrs. Sam (Etta) De Jong and Mrs. Clarence (Jeanette) Den Hartog, all of Orange City, Mrs. Albert (Elizabeth) Dykstra of rural Le Mars and Mrs. Harriett J. Obituary of Ring De Jager 88 a retired Orange City farmer, died April 14 in Orange City Municipal Hospital. Services were at 1:30 p.m. April 17 in the First Reformed Church at Orange City. The Rev. Perry Raak and Frank Smuitjer officiated. Burial was in West Lawn Cemetery under direction of the Van Etten Funeral home at Orange City. Mr. De Jager was born Dec 20 1885, at Orange City and he was a lifelong resident of Orange City. He married Rena Raak March 11, 1914. The death of Hessel de Jager, who lived three miles southwest of this city, occurred last Wednesday. Deceased was an old resident of this county and was well known by our people. He was sixty years of age. The funeral services were held Friday afternoon from the First Reformed Church, Rev. Van der Ploeg having charge of the exercises. His wife and several children survive him. Mr. De Jager had a wide acquaintance in the county and had the universal respect of his friends who extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.
