HENRY LIGHTBOURNE BAWDEN was born 28 December 1845 in Cobra (Santiago suburb), Cuba, son of Stephen and Mary Terrill Bawden The family moved to Davenport in the summer of 1860 according to land deeds in Scott County, and Henry joined the Union Army in September.

After the war, he traveled by ox team to Colorado, but returned to Davenport to begin the study of medicine. He was educated at Griswold College (no longer exists – all male school on the southeast corner of Davenport Central High School now part of that school’s campus). He “read medicine” with Dr. A. S. Maxwell in his Davenport office and attended lectures at the University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City, where he graduated 8 March 1873. He began practice in Davenport and served as Scott County Coroner for over 18 years and member of the county medical society.

On 28 January 1877, Henry married Bella Murtha Angel in Davenport’s First Presbyterian Church, 7th & Brady Streets. Little is known about Bella other than she was born 4 September 1857 in New York City, New York.

Henry divorced Bella and married Ida Elberts, dtr of Wilson and Mary Gilbert Elberts on 17 December 1902 in Davenport. On 30 December 1904, Ida divorced Henry for “habitual drunkenness and cruel and inhuman treatment”. He retired from medicine and moved to Montana with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mundt with whom he lived in Davenport. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and active in the order. He died 22 January 1919 in Ismay, Custer Cnty, MT, and is buried in Davenport’s Oakdale Memorial Gardens with his parents and infant brother.

Bella Bawden moved to Chicago about 1908 with her son James Albert, giving her marital status as “widow”. She lived with her son-in-law Morse Brown in the 1920 Chicago census.. In the 1930 federal census for Chicago, Bella is living with the Abbe household at 5116 W. Pensacola Avenue as a 72-yo boarder. Bella died 12 October 1946 in Springfield, Lane Cnty, OR, where she was living with son George, and wife Anna who also died there 27 May 1950. Bella, George and Anna are buried in Springfield’s Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
i. Harry E. b 2 May 1878 in Davenport, d 27 February 1881. Buried in Oakdale.
Ii George S. b 27 July 1880 in Davenport, Scott Cnty, IA. Became medical doctor and practiced with father. He married 8 May 1907 Judith M. Holstrom, nurse from Chicago working at St. Luke’s Hospital now Genesis East Hospital. She divorced George 29 August 1907 – George had deserted her on 27 July. On 31 October 1908 George married Anna Elizabeth Seibel, b 5 May 1884, dtr of John Henry and Charlotte Loehter Seibel of Pleasant Valley, Scott County, IA. George served in the Army during WWI and returned to Davenport to resume his practice until 1920 when he and family left. They lived many years in Jasper, Wyoming.
He died 19 October 1959 in Springfield, Lane Cnty, OR on where he and the family lived at 404 N. 19th St They were members of Hope Lutheran Church and George was a member of Springfield American Legion. Burial for in Springfield’s Mt. Vernon Cemetery. (obit info).

Iii, James Albert b 13 October 1882 in Davenport. Left with Bella about 1908 to live in Chicago as an agent with Delaware and Reliance Insurance Co. He married in Jacksonville, Frances R. Talmage b 8 June 1911 of Jacksonville, Morgan Cnty, IL. They lived in Chicago until 1915 when they moved to Indiana. James’ WWII draft card 2240159 issued in Marion, IN. They are buried in Indianapolis’ Crown Hill Cemetery, Lot 42-43 Sect 75. James d. Feb 1971 305-09-5710; Frances d. 31 December 1962
iv Clark J. b. 25 March 1885, d 12 April 1885 in Davenport and is buried in Oakdale Cemetery.
v. Mae Ella b. 27 April 1886 in Davenport. After graduation from Davenport High School in 1905, she took a kindergarten course and assisted Miss Alice Robinson in her Peoples Union Mission Kindergarten est. in 1900. Mae Ella also sang in local musical programs.
On 21 July 1908 at Edwards Congregational Church in Davenport, she married Morse Nevin Brown, b 29 Oct 1881 in Richland, Eaton Cnty, MI, son of Samuel Brown. (resource spellings Morris – Marse) He lived at 734 E. 14th in Davenport and was an usher at 1st Presbyterian Church in 1905 on Kirkwood and Iowa. He worked as an auditor for Peabody Coal Co. in Chicago, Cook Cnty, IL. He died May 1973 in Fayetteville, WA.
Mae Ella died at age 38 on 24 December 1924 in Chicago. She’s buried in an unmarked grave in Irving Park Cemetery. Irving Park, IL
