REV. A. L. BATES

Rev. A. L. Bates was born in the state of Illinois, May 4, 1858 and died at his home in Diagonal, Iowa, April 7, 1910, being 51 years, 11 months and 3 days old at the time of his death.

He moved with his parents to Iowa in 1873. He was converted, February, 1876, graduated at Simpson College, June, 1886, was licensed to preach, June, 1885 by Rev. A. Brown, P. E. of the Chariton District.

He joined the Des Moines conference in the fall of 1886 and preached in this conference for 24 years until his death; serving the following charges: Woodburn and Lucas, Russell, Lacona, Redding, New York, Columbia, Milo, Kellerton, Yorktown, Grant, Orient, Columbia the second time, and Diagonal, his present charge.

He was married to Miss Katie Marshall, of Chariton, April 10, 1889. Their home was blessed with 6 children, 4 of whom, Ruth, Grace, Paul and Robert, live to comfort their mother. Twin boys died and were buried at Yorktown.

Brother Bates was always faithful in his pastorate, seldom missing an appointment. He was blessed with good health until the last year, when it was noticeable to all that his physical strength was failing, especially was this so after his revival campaign was over.

He suffered much in his last sickness and the night before his death called his wife to his bedside, gave her his parting message, helped plan for the future of his loved ones and his funeral arrangements, requesting that Bro. B. F. Miller preach his funeral, and then waited patiently for the end, which came at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, April 7. In his ministry he was a good shepherd and truly "gave his life for the sheep."

His sister and three brothers were present at the funeral, which was preached in Diagonal and his body was then taken to Chariton for burial, to await the morn of the resurrection. For "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."

The funeral was very largely attended. There were 28 of his ministerial brethren from the Des Moines Conference present.
