HUGH FERGUSON ANSWERS DEATH'S CALL
The Tingley community was saddened Wednesday monring by the death of H.W. FERGUSON, who was almost 86 years of age. He passed away in the same house in which he and Mrs. FERGUSON started housekeeping 47 years ago.
Mr. FERGUSON, with his quiet friendliness and kindly smile, will be missed by both young and old.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the United Presbyterian church, of which he had been an active member since 1896, with the exception of ten years (1904-1914) spent in Clearfield, Iowa.
Last rites were in charge of the Edwards Funeral Service. Services were conducted by the Rev. B.M. DOBBIN, D.D., with Rev. B.E. DOBBINS assisting. Burial was in the Tingley cemetery.
Following is his life story:
Hugh William FERGUSON, son of George and Mary FERGUSON, was born in Burlington, Iowa, September 26, 1863, and died at his home in Tingley, Iowa, September 14, 1949. He belonged to a family of six brothers: Taylor, Hugh, Harry, Irwin, Frank and Port, all of whom except Frank have passed away. Frank was not able to attend the funeral because of ill health.
All his life was spent in Iowa. He first moved to Tingley in 1896. After a few years he moved to other communities but returned in 1914 to Tingley where, for the remainder of his life he engaged in farming and business.
In 1902 he was married to Birdie APPLETON and to this union three children were born: Mrs. Bryce WHISLER of Newberg, Ore.; and George and Ira of Tingley. These with other relatives, including ten grandchildren, are left to mourn the loss of a good husband and father.
In early life he became a member of the church and through all his years he lived a consistent Christian life. In 1896 he brought his letter to the Tingley United Presbyterian church and was soon elected an elder. Upon his return, after being away a few years, he was again elected to the eldership in 1916 and remained in that office until the time of his death, a term of 34 years in the Tingley session, of which he was clerk for 25 years.
He loved his Bible, and his service for his Master included many years of work as superintendent and teacher in the Sabbath school.
He was a man of high principles, honest in his dealings, and strong in his adherence to whatever he believed to be right.
His going truly leaves an empty space in church and community.
"He fought a good fight, he finished the course, he kept the faith" For such is laid up the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give at that day.
