Herbert Paul Carson was born May 29, 1913, in Clearfield, Iowa the son of
Everett Leroy Carson and Amanda May (Renfro) Carson. He had three sisters,
Thurma who was born in 1912; Marion in 1916 and Earlus in 1919. He grew up
attending school in Bedford, graduating with the Class of 1930. During high
school he had several after school jobs, along with participating in Football
and track and field. After graduation he worked in the Bedford area for
several years. On January 9, 1933, he was united in marriage to Mary Alice
King in Pickering, Missouri. Together they had four children, Virginia Eloise
born in 1933 in Bedford; Dale Leroy in 1947 in Grants Pass, Oregon; Dennis
Paul in 1948 in Medford, Oregon and Debra Louise in 1952 also in Medford.
Shortly after their marriage, Herb and the family moved to Council Bluffs,
Iowa where he was a driver for a laundry company until 1939. The family
moved again to the Los Angeles, California area. During the years of World
War II, Herb worked in defense plants (Northrup) as a tool and die maker,
and also for Howard Hughes as a sub-contractor machining aircraft parts.
Mr. Hughes wanted Herb to go into business with him, but Herb thought
Howard had some 'issues'. In 1945, the family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon,
moving again in 1947 to Medford, Oregon. From about 1947 to 1973, Herb
was a bus driver for the Greyhound Bus Company. During the years he
was a bus driver, he also operated a log truck and a Greyhound Moving
and Storage Company. In 1979, after his retirement, Herb and Mary
moved to Crooked River Ranch in Oregon where they built a home, living
there until 1990, when they sold out, returning to Bedford, Iowa where
they made their home.
Herb had a very creative mind, having the ability to build and engineer
things. He actually built and designed his first RV, which he made from
an old Greyhound Bus! He was a member of the Christian Church and
served as past secretary and vice-president for the Bedford Lions Club.
During their retirement years together, Herb and Mary enjoyed
traveling in their motor home. They visited all 50 states, enjoying the
people they met along the way. Mary passed away in May of 2006.
Left to cherish Herb's memory are his four children, Virginia "Eloise"
Suslick and husband Ron of Tacoma, Washington; Dale Carson and
wife Megan of Tucson, Arizona; Dennis Carson and wife Benchamars of
Port Orchard, Washington; and Debra McCormack and husband Michael
