Thursday, August 5, 2010BENTON NATIVE, HUSBAND DIE in APARTMENT FIRE
A Benton native was one of two elderly residents of Danford Hall Senior Apartments, in Saint Joseph, MO, who died in a fire July 25.
Ellis Marion STEPHENS, 89, and his wife, Iris E. STEPHENS, 86, died in the fire. Mrs. STEPHENS was Iris SCHLAPIA STEPHENS, originally from Benton.
The STEPHENS were found by police in the hallway outside their apartment, overcome by smoke from the fire.
The fire began in the apartment across the hallway from there where Roger OWENS fell asleep with a lit cigarette [in] his hand, according to the Saint Joseph Fire Department investigators.
OWENS was connected to his oxygen machine when the cigarette fell to his clothes, which caused the fire to spread quickly from his clothing to the right side of his armchair, onto the southeast corner of the 38-apartment senior living unit.
OWENS was taken to the Heartland Regional Medical Center with the burns he suffered in the incident.
Seven other residents of the apartments were transferred to the hospital with smoke inhalation and minor burns.
Some 42 residents were displaced from the 38-unit complex. Damage to the apartments was listed at half a million dollars.

Iris Elaine STEPHENS, formerly of Maryville [Missouri], age 86, was born October 2, 1923, in Benton, Iowa, to Leonard Gleason and Grace Elaine (KUJAITH) SCHLAPIA and passed away July 25, 2010, in St. Joseph [Missouri].
Iris loved the Lord and was a loving and gracious woman who was an inspiration to us all. She retired from Orshelin's after 25 years and was one of the famous "Rosie the Riveters" during World War II, where she made airplane wings. Iris loved to sing and sang at numerous weddings, funerals, and other events.
She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lowell SCHLAPIA; and one grandson, Robert Ellis GOOLD.
Survivors include four children: Leonard STEPHENS, St. Joseph; Susanne STAMPER (Larry), Turney; Diane GOOLD (Clarence), Camp Farwesta; and Beverly KLOCKO (Tim), Thomasville, Ga.; one brother, Dean SCHLAPIA (Mary Jo), Algona, Iowa; and one sister, Eileen DETHLOFF, Fowler, Mich.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Camp Farwesta, 6091 S.W. Highway 36, Stewartsville, MO 64490, with cremation following and private inurnment in Nodaway Memorial Gardens at a later date. Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Community of Christ Church, Stewartsville, Missouri.

Ellis Marion STEPHENS, formerly of Maryville [Missouri], age 89, was born April 7, 1921, in Maryville to Fredrick Allen and Edna Lorina (SMITH) STEPHENS and passed away July 25, 2010, in St. Joseph [Missouri}.
On November 13, 1942, Ellis married Iris SCHLAPIA in Los Angeles, Calif. To this union four children were born. Ellis was in the United States Army and served our country during World War II. Ellis was a gentleman, very loving, and very kind. He was an ordained Elder in The Community of Christ Church and loved the Lord and his family. Ellis was former grounds keeper of Camp Farwesta.
Preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Frederick STEPHENS; two sisters, Ester PEIRSON and Betty KING.
Survivors include four children: Leonard STEPHENS, St. Joseph; Susanne STAMPER (Larry), Turney; Diane GOOLD (Clarence), Camp Farwesta; and Beverly KLOCKO (Tim), Thomasville, Ga.; two sisters: Doris COLLINS, Savannah, Mo.; and Mary DRYDALE (Wayne), Bolkow, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
