Ida Mae(y) Wells, daughter of Charles Raymond and Jessie Myrtle Cummings Sharp, was born September 4, 1912, near Pawnee and Eagleville, Missouri, and departed this life at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, December 14, 1997, at age 85. She joined the RLDS Church at a young age. Mae(y) as she was preferred to be called (ed. note - and preferred spelling with an e), graduated from Eagleville High School in May, 1930, as valedictorian of her class. She was married on June 17, 1933, to Vivian LeRoy Wells, and to this union four daughters and two sons were born. Mae spent her childhood and most of her adult life on farms in northern Missouri and Ringgold County, Iowa. She spent over forty years of her life with Vivian on the family farm in Poe Township southeast of Mt. Ayr, before selling most of the farm machinery and moving to a Mt. Ayr residence in 1984, and to Clearview Home in 1992, where she resided until shortly before her final illness.
She was active in community, educational, and political affairs most of her adult life, in addition to raising the six children and taking an active role in the management and operation of their farms. She was a hardworking person who was proud of her achievements and of her family. She also enjoyed social activities with friends and family,and had hobbies including square dancing, embroidering and needlework, gardening, traveling,and later bingo at Clearview Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Cecil Houston Sharp and Oren Richard Sharp, both of whom died in early childhood, by a daughter, Jeanne Lynn Wells, and by Vivian, her beloved husband and companion for over 56 years.
She is mourned by her surviving children; Millicent Ann and her husband Ed Knight of rural Mount Ayr, James R. (J.R.) Wells and wife Virginia of Gladstone, Missouri, Gary L. Wells and wife Karen of Henderson, Nevada, Janet M. and husband Carl Fox of Indianola, Iowa, Patricia K. and husband Kenneth Baker of Osceola, Iowa, by nine grandchildren, by five great grandchildren, by her sister Marie Sharp Wells Piatt, of Lamoni, Iowa, and by other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 17, 1997, at Wilson Watson Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, also in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
