VICTOR LYNN "VIC" SHIELDS
Victor Lynn SHIELDS was born on a farm in Ringgold County, Iowa to Bertha and Charles SHIELDS on June 12, 1915 and died September 28, 2007 at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr. He attended school through the 8th grade at Caledonia and attended Caledonia Methodist Church. Vic was united in marriage to Vernice May BANNER on March 5, 1938 in Mount Ayr. To this union were born three children; Mary Lou GOETZ of Norwalk, Gary (DeAnn) of Cedar Rapids, and Jerry (Norma) of Mount Ayr. Vic and Vernice farmed for most of their 69 married years, living on a farm near Caledonia where he built nearly all of the buildings on the present farmstead.
While Vic had a special knack of caring for cows and pigs, he is well remembered by his friends and family for other traits as well – whistling a little tune throughout the day, giving everyone a nick name, and his special way with words. He had many special stories to tell at family gatherings. He enjoyed country music and had a large collection of country tapes that he liked to share at family events.
Vic was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Carroll SHIELDS, Charles SHIELDS, Jr., and Donella JANSSEN HEISERMAN; son-in-law Benny GOETZ; and a grandson Craig SHIELDS.
Left to cherish his memory in addition to Vernice and his children are five grandchildren Scott (Cindy) GOETZ of Liberty Center, Karla (Mike) STANKET of Winterset, Jenny (Rob) O’BRIEN of Paola, KS, Jody (Larry) LIPCAMON of Iowa City, and Todd (Alisa) SHIELDS of Maquoketa; five great-grandchildren Kyla and Clint STANLEY, Callie O’BREIN, and Zachary and Ethan SHIELDS; three sisters-in-law Pauline SHIELDS of Corvallis, OR, Mabel SHIELDS of Mount Ayr, and Marie CRETARS of Des Moines.
Services were held Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. from Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
