OBITUARY - WINFIELD SCOTT BEAR
W[infield] S[cott BEAR, formerly of Des Moines, died at his home in Bell, Calif., August 8. He was born October 11, 1861, in Ringgold County, Iowa, and was the eldest of three sons born to Solomon BEAR and Sarah (WALKER) BEAR. His brothers died in early childhood.
For a number of years he taught school in Illinois and Iowa, at one time being superintendent of the school at Kellerton. Later he graduated from the Highland Park College of Pharmacy and for forty years operated drug stores in Kellerton, Decatur, Colfax and Des Moines, until his retirement about 15 years ago.
Mr. BEAR was a member of the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Modern Woodmen of America lodges.
Surviving besides his widow, Eva (PRICE) BEAR, are three daughters, Mrs. H. E. MUELLER of Marshfield, Wis., Mrs. Carlton CASJENS and Mrs. Irene ALLEN of Bell, Calif.; three grandchildren, Pvt. Carlton CASJENS, Jr., Robert CASJENS and Virginia Ann ALLEN; three half-sisters, Mrs. Lance MAGGARD of Kellerton, Mrs. Mary ATWOOD of Salem, Calif., and Mrs. Agnes GILES of Orland, Calif., and a half-brother, Frank BEAR of Kellerton. A daughter, Leone, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, August 16, at 1:30 o'clock, from Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial was in Glendale cemetery [Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa].
