Pioneer Citizen Dies At Home Here--Past 80 Years

William Barton GILREATH, who had been sick for the past three weeks died at his home Saturday night [January 16, 1932, Lake Andes, South Dakota]. He had been ill several times within the past year but only for a few days. His last illness was caused by paralysis of the bowel and terminated in his death. All the family had been summoned and were at his bedside for several days before the end came with the exception of the youngest son, Clay D. GILREATH, who is very sick in a Sioux Falls hospital and cannot even be told of his father's demise.

The passing of Mr. GILREATH is a sad loss to the community. His friends who have helped with him in laboring for the development of the town and farming interests of this locality will mourn the passing of a true friend and the younger generation have lost a real benefactor and adviser. The life's work of a man like Mr. GILREATH is beyond price to his community.

(portion missing from copy). . . GILREATH with his sons Hoyle H. and Clay D. established the Valley State Bank but sold their interests after 8 years. Mr. GILREATH was a member of the Masonic orders, the A.F.&A.M. and St. George's Chapter of Lake Andes, also the Oriental Consistory of Yankton and El Riad Shrine of Sioux Falls. He joined the Odd Fellows lodge, No. 464, in Grand River, Iowa, but transferred his membership to the local order.

He leaves his widow, three sons, Hoyle H. of Yankton, Clay Dean of Sioux Falls, William [Lloyd] of Wagner and one daughter, Odetta M. (Mrs. C. O. Vanderpool) of Lake Andes. Also 22 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. One son, James W. was killed in 1916 in an auto accident. [James Weaver was 36-years-old; interment at Lake View Cemetery, Lake Andes, Charles Mix County, South Dakota.]

Mr. and Mrs. GILREATH celebrated their golden wedding January 1, 1925. [They were married in Ringgold County, Iowa.]

Besides the immediate family Mr. GILREATH leaves a sister, Mrs. Maria QUIETT of Leon, Iowa and a half brother, Harry H. and a half sister, Mrs. Henry OVERHOLTZER, both of Grand River, Iowa, a sister in Ohio, Mrs. Celia CALFEE, a brother James W. of Lake Andes. (NOTE: His brother was James A. GILREATH. James Weaver was his son.)

The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. E. F. SIEGFRIEDT of the Episcopal church of Yankton and Rev E. Claude SMITH of the local Presbyterian church, officiating. Services at the grave were in charge of the Odd Fellows lodge and the Masonic order, A.F.&A.M. Interment in the Lakeview cemetery [Lake Andes, Charles Mix County, South Dakota].

Up to December 14, 1931, the family of the son, Hoyle H. GILREATH of Yankton was unusually blessed in that the great-grand parents on both sides were living, making a four generation group including both the maternal and paternal great-grandparents, numbering eight. Since that date two of the great-grandfathers have passed away.
