NOTICE of DEATH

Samuel CRAWFORD, the subject of this notice, was a native of New York City, born November 2nd, 1834. He came to Iowa in early life, served in the late war, returned and settled in Ringgold county about 23 years ago. On March 16th, 1873, he was married to Miss Mary E. BONEFIELD of this county, who survives him. During his sickness he often expressed a desire to go to the better country. He died unconscious at his home in Diagonal, July 29, 1891, at 2 a.m. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church of which the deceased was a devoted member. Rev. Mr. SMITH read scripture selections, and Mr. FULLER conducted the singing. The funeral was largely attended by town and country people. The procession to the [Centenary] cemetery was the largest ever seen for many years. Comrades J. A. BENSON, A. HARRIS, Robt. CAMPBELL, Samuel PHILLIPS, Elijah CAMPBELL and J. F. RAPP acted as pall bearers, and Wm. BRADLEY bore at the head of the procession the grand old flag. At the grave the Grand Army boys paid the last tributes to their dead comrade. The impressive ritual of the G.A.R. was performed by Commander John WILKINSON, Chaplain C. J. TODD and others. Seven children [including Mary E., Rebecca L., Adaline, Margaret, and Albena] survive him, one a little boy and their widowed mother, for all of whom unusual sympathy is felt. - B. D. HIMEBAUGH.
