Ruth was born on May 15, 1928, in Grinnell, the daughter of Elmer Louis and Sylvia Mabel Baustian Puls. She was raised on her family farm in Sheridan Township, north of Malcom, and attended a country school near her home.
On April 13, 1952, she was united in marriage to Richard “Bush” Hasselbrink, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Poweshiek County, north of Malcom. The couple farmed for a few years and later moved to Grinnell. For many years, Ruth was employed at the Grinnell Country Club and the Mayflower Community.
Ruth was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church; she held a strong faith and enjoyed attending church. Her love for her family was very strong and she especially enjoyed spending her time with them. She loved her home and the life she shared there with family and friends. Ruth enjoyed devoting her time to tending to her large flower and vegetable gardens, canning her produce, and making homemade jelly. She was a wonderful cook; her grandchildren especially enjoyed her oatmeal raisin cookies, her banana bread, and other goodies. She held a passion for arts and crafts, including embroidering and sewing together with her daughters. She looked forward to family trips, the annual 4th of July Prince Street neighborhood picnics, and sitting outside her home visiting with family and friends.
She is survived by her four children, Joyce Endres of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kathy (Lonnie) Fults of Kellogg, Mike (Dana) Hasselbrink of Kellogg, and Susan (Brad) Marlatt of Grinnell; her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Hasselbrink of Racine, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren: Jon (Katie) Hasselbrink of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jennifer (Dan) Wiseman of Kenosha Wisconsin, Matt Endres of Lincoln, Nebraska, Tommy Endres of Lincoln, Nebraska, Stephanie (Justin) Taylor of Germany, Luke Fults of Newton, Zach (Rachel) Hasselbrink of Baxter, Tyler Hasselbrink of Newton, Clinton (Samanthya) Marlatt of Des Moines, and Mitchell (Lauren Barz) Marlatt of Ankeny; ten great-grandchildren, Madison, Dillon, and Isabelle Taylor, Connor and Kayla Wiseman, Payton and Gavin Hasselbrink, and Sloan and Josey Hasselbrink, and Oliviya Marlatt.
