Charles E. Arment, 72, of Grinnell, died May 10, 2011, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, retired, Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Dave Byers, Mike Groves, Larry Peebles, Scott Schmidt, Scott Sieck, and Pat White. Honorary bearers will be Jack Byers, Bob Boyd, Loyd Carstensen, Larry Cox, Keith Davis, Giles Jay, Dennis Mitchell, Gene Wedeking and members of the Grinnell Fire Department. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with military honors.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Fire Department.

Charles was born July 7, 1938, in Tainter, Iowa, the son of Myrle and Blanche Wood Arment. He was raised in Grinnell and Searsboro and was a 1956 graduate of Searsboro High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marines Corps.

On July 20, 1958, he was united in marriage to Katherine Irene Watson, in Searsboro. The couple made their home in Grinnell. He began his employment at the NAPA Auto Store in Grinnell on April 1, 1958, and later became owner. He retired on April 1, 1998. Following his retirement he worked part-time for several years at Arnolds Motor Supply.

Charles was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club, Grinnell Elks Lodge and the Iowa Automotive Wholesalers Association, where he served on the board from 1986 to 1988. He was a volunteer fireman to the City of Grinnell from 1973 to 1980.

He enjoyed spending his time socializing and camping with family and friends at their farm pond near Searsboro. He enjoyed attending Iowa State Fire Conventions for over 30 consecutive years. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Indians and NASCAR.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine of Grinnell; two children, Patti Jo (Kenny) Collins of Grinnell and Steven (Suzie) Arment of Searsboro; two grandchildren, Nicole and Natalie Arment; two step-grandchildren, Toni and Joe Collins; two sisters, Mildred Cogley and Veda Reedy of Grinnell; and one brother, Eugene Arment of Lynnville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Dorothy Niemants. ~ The Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, Iowa 10 May 2011.
