Mary Virginia Henry Moore was born December 8, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Fay (Moore) Henry. She attended Creston schools and graduated from Creston High School in 1946. She attended Jr. College in Creston for a time and then moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI. When she returned to Creston she went back to school but left to marry. Mary met Daniel W. (Bill) Moore, after he returned from the Navy, at the Chicken Inn Ballroom near Creston and they were married February 5, 1950. Mary loved learning and taking classes. After her children graduated from high school she took classes at Iowa Western Community College and graduated from Southwestern Community College in 1987. After retiring from 22 years with the Council Bluffs Schools (lastly as a librarian) she began taking classes at Buena Vista College. She graduated with a double major in History and English in 1995 at the age of 67. She was currently working as a Docent at the Historic General Dodge House.
One of Mary's best qualities was her ability to make each and every person she met feel special and interesting to her. Each grandchild felt their own special connection to Grandma. She was a loving, supportive, and fun mother and grandmother, and her energetic involvement in things she loved was an inspiration to her family. She loved watching professional tennis (she went to NYC to the U.S. Open twice and would stay up into the early morning hours watching the Australian Open), travel (she made several trips to Southern cities, along with going to Boston, Philadelphia, London and Ireland), stock car racing, museums, ethnic foods, reading, the history of English royalty, and of course, everything to do with "Gone With The Wind" and the history of the Civil War. She combined her love of her favorite movie with her sewing talent to make several "Gone with the Wind" costumes for herself. She also made many costumes and quilts for her grandchildren.
She was currently a member of the Civil War Preservation Trust, Loess Hills Learners, Page Turner Book Club, State Paper Doll Society, Kanesville Miniatures, Amelia Bloomer Society, and the Iowa Retired Personnel Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel W. (Bill) Moore, her parents, Ray and Fay Henry, and her brother Mark Henry. Mary is survived by her four children, son Michael and wife Jean Gardner, of Tustin, CA; daughter Maureen and husband Ross Welterlen of Boone, IA; daughter Kerry and husband Randy Kroneman of Des Moines, IA; and son Daniel and wife Kim and of Papillion, NE; grandchildren, Tessa, Madison, Jarrick, and Regina Welterlen; Logan, Lucas, and Kalleigh Kroneman; Kylee, Trey, Danielle, and Jadyn Moore; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Mary Moore of Kent, IA; Roger and Ann Moore of Kent, IA; Virginia Moore of Pico Rivera, CA; Robert and Barb Moore of West Plains, MO.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
