Died Sunday Evening Following Injuries in Auto Accident
Mention was made in these columns last week telling of the serious accident that befell Castello Allison, well known resident of Griswold, when his automobile was wrecked about six miles west of Carson. Following the accident Mr. Allison was brought to Griswold, but his injuries were so serious he was rushed to the Atlantic hospital where he lingered between life and death several days. Everything possible that skilled physicians and trained nurses could do for him was resorted to but the injuries proved so serious that death relieved him of his sufferings about five o’clock Sunday afternoon. Following his death the remains were brought to the Wheeler Funeral Home in this city, where they were prepared for burial and later taken to the home of his mother and laid in state until the hour of the funeral services.
The funeral was held this (Wednesday) afternoon at the home of his mother, conducted by the Rev. Richard Rowe, pastor of the Methodist Church. Members of the American Legion conducted a full military service both at the home and at the grave in the Griswold Cemetery. Burial was made on the family lot by the side of his father, the late John Allison, who died March 8, 1931. There was a very large attendance of relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects to a life long citizen.
Castello, son of John and Mary Allison, was born at Newmansville, Ill., August 20th, 1877 and departed this life at Atlantic, Iowa, September 2, 1934, aged 57 years and 12 days. The family left Illinois in 1881 and came to the new town of Griswold to make their home. Here Mr. Allison attend the schools of Griswold and grew to manhood. He was an electrician by profession and save for two years was in charge of the electrical work for the Farmers Mutual Telephone Co., and later with the Middle States Utilities Co., when the exchange was taken over from the Farmers Mutual Co. On April 26th, 1917, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was assigned to the Battleship Vermont. He served for 22 months and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Upon his return to Griswold he resumed his duties with the telephone company and since that time has been a very efficient man for the company. He was preceded in death by a brother, who died in infancy, and his father, who died in 1931. There remains to mourn his departure his aged mother, a sister, Mrs. Bertha Strickland, a niece, Mrs. Nellie Shepard, of Des Moines, and a nephew, Neil Denny, of Omaha, two Grand nieces and one grand nephew, besides many other relatives and close friends. Mr. Allison never married but remained to assist in the car of his mother. He was a man who attended strictly to his own affairs yet was ready to take an active part in the affairs that were for the betterment of his fellow men. He was a member of Griswold American Legion Post No.508, of Griswold, and took an active part in the work of that organization. He was a kind son, a good brother, and a faithful friend. He will be greatly missed by all who came in contact with him in his work.
