Smythe, Bernard Robert - 1938-2011

Bernard Smythe, 73, of Ankeny, died Thursday, December 8, 2011. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 10, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.), with burial following, at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Bernard was born September 3, 1938 in Zanesville, Ohio, to George and Mary Grace Smythe. He graduated from Zanesville High School, and as a young boy, he enjoyed playing trumpet in the Junior High and High School bands. He played in the Zanesville Community Band for several years.
He was a successful and popular shoe salesman for McHenry shoe store in Zanesville, for 29 years, during which he also painted houses. In 1976, he came to Iowa to work with his brother in construction. Later he went to work at Camp Dodge as a painter.
He enjoyed his granddaughter, his children, watching TV, and keeping busy working. He was a fan of race car driver Jeff Gordon (#24). One of Bernard's most endearing qualities was his amazing sense of humor.
Bernard is survived by his children; Lori (Steven) Burnside of Port Crane, NY, Jason Smythe, of Altoona, and Christopher Smythe, of Mitchellville, a twin brother Burdette Smythe, of Ankeny, and one grand-daughter, Zoée Smythe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace (Smith) Smythe, a son, Bernard Jr., a sister, Boneva (Ed) Wheeler of Newark, OH, and two children.
